October is National Adopt a Shelter Animal Month! This need resonates with me on such a deep level. I loved Cindy Hazen’s comment on the original post. It couldn’t be more true: “adopt, don’t shop”. Amen to that! There are so many animals in need of a home. If you have the ability, why not fulfill that need? Do you need a designer pet or a healthy heartbeat who loves you? Funnily enough, I somehow have two “designer pets” at home. What most people don’t realize is that they’re both rescues and they picked me first. I had no idea that these breeds mattered to people until after I adopted them. The number of people who ask me if my pets are for sale never ceases to shock me. I have two sought-after breeds (a Lynx Point Siamese cat & Jack Russell dog), but I didn’t search for those specific breeds. I adopted both of them out of shelters. If you are looking for a specialty breed, I encourage you to keep an eye on shelters or reach out to one of the many agencies that help place rescue animals. One of my favorite job perks is that Icon Foods promotes a pet friendly facility. Because of this, I was able to adopt a sweet dog who joins me in the office everyday. I’ve also learned a lot of information about supporting a dog’s microbiome. Using #prebiotic fibers — like chicory inulin and FOS — in food and treats, keeps our furry friends feeling good. Who could ask for more than that? My little guy suffers from epilepsy, which I had never encountered before, but the knowledge I obtained about maintaining a ketogenic diet and building his microbiome has been crucial in helping him live a normal, happy life. Pet health is personal for me. Rescuing animals in need is a personal passion on mine. If you want to learn more, I’m happy to talk! Together, we can find forever homes!
October is National Adopt a Shelter Animal Month and we’re partnering with our local animal shelters to bring awareness to pets looking for a happy, healthy home. Most people don’t realize a pet’s gut health plays such a crucial role in their overall well-being until they find themselves deep cleaning their carpet. Like humans, the pet gut microbiome consists of trillions of microorganisms that directly impact a pet’s digestive system, immune function, and mental health.
