Sharing an excellent report that's just been launched: Community-led Housing for All. Housing co-operatives and community-owned housing present a viable means for addressing Oxford's affordable housing crisis, by creating homes that are permanently affordable - as opposed to "affordable homes" sold on the private market that are only affordable the first time they are sold... Research shows that Black and Ethnic Minority individuals find themselves at the sharp end of the affordable housing crisis and yet are underrepresented in the co-operative and community-led housing sector (though this hasn't always been the case; there is a rich history of Black-led housing co-ops in the UK). This report looks at the barriers BME communities face in accessing community-led housing and shares recommendations to facilitate participation. Co-authored by community-led housing practitioners Henri Baptiste and Claude Hendrickson MBE, alongside researchers from University of Liverpool and Sheffield Hallam University. To mark National Fair Housing Month I'm sharing this video clip (https://lnkd.in/eqtt35MK) that Kadineyse Paz shared with us during a lunch-n-learn presentation to our team. Kadineyse is a Community Planner for Housing & Equity with JM Goldson and recently completed a project with one of her professors at Tufts. The broad purpose of this project was to expand awareness and strengthen the implementation of fair housing in Massachusetts. Outside of just doing research, they sought to identify key and new voices in Greater Boston cities who could help to identify roadblocks to effective fair housing strategies in their areas. The report had four goals: 1) To help raise public awareness about fair housing, and implications for enforcement, especially as it involves people that identify as Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color (BIPOC) 2) Broaden discussion about fair housing where fair housing advocates communicate with other civic voices 3) Assist with ensuring that narratives calling for increasing affordable housing are conjoined with a narrative of affirmatively furthering fair housing 4) Encourage greater local government attention to the history of fair housing and how institutional racism has shaped suburban white communities today Read the report here: https://lnkd.in/e8wQvDsv #communityplanning #urbanplanning #equity #fairhousing #affordablehousing #housinghistory

Young residents - who are often not tenants or leaseholders - aren't written into housing policy or reflected within wider strategies of housing associations. Metropolitan Thames Valley, Clarion Housing Group and Hyde wanted to review collectively where young people’s needs, voices and leadership could be embedded across their services by initiating the Young Residents in Partnership project. In collaboration with Partnership for Young London and peer researchers, the final report of last year’s phase is now published: 'Shaping Housing Futures: young residents using peer research in housing to make the invisible visible'. This report aims to contribute to identifying opportunities to integrate youth voice and leadership into structures that can influence policy and practice across housing associations. It highlights key findings from both speaking with young residents as well as with housing sector professionals, and provides recommendations designed by the peer research team, such as "define young people as a separate stakeholder into housing policy with specific procedures in place." The report will be the foundation for the next phase of the Young Residents in Partnership Project, in which six peer researchers who are all young residents with MTVH, Clarion and Hyde, will work together with the housing sector to collaborate on featuring young residents in housing policy and practice. As #FairHousingMonth comes to an end, the Partnership is proud to be among the other organizations signed on to this letter urging the Biden Administration to release the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)’s final “Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing” (AFFH) rule. "...a fair housing market cannot be realized without a strong AFFH rule. By investing in interventions that ensure that everyone can access fair, affordable, and accessible housing in thriving neighborhoods, we can create communities of opportunity. We urge the White House to immediately release the final proposed AFFH rule, so that more Americans can have their chance at the American Dream." Learn more: https://bit.ly/3QfAve0 #HereForHousing

Harvard's Joint Center for Housing Studies should be everyone's "go to" for reliable information about the housing market. This paper nails and clearly explains the nexus of community governance and housing development - or utter lack thereof. It's a "must read". #housing #housingcrisis #harvarduniversity #communitydevelopment #realestate #realestatedevelopment https://lnkd.in/gfNb37sx

Earlier this year, Paavo Monkkonen, Aaron Barrall, and Aurora Echavarria authored, “Meaningful Action: Evaluating Local Government Plans to Affirmatively Further Fair Housing in California,” arguing that “standardizing reporting requirements for housing element programs, as HCD [The State of California’s Housing Department] recently did for the sites’ inventories in 2021, may seem like a small change, yet it could make AFFH programs meaningful by improving state review,” along with other policy ideas. And just two weeks ago, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bipartisan housing package, which includes legislation aimed at strengthening local government reporting requirements around advancing furthering fair housing (AB2667) that aligns with many of the recommendations! Big news at Council yesterday! City of Waterloo council unanimously approved the direction to move towards rezoning lands at 2025 University Avenue E to support a new, mixed-income housing development that could support up to 700 affordable and attainable units. The property could support an estimated 480 stacked townhouses and 250 apartment units. This decision is another way the City of Waterloo is addressing the issue of housing in our community. People need affordable places to live. "The province told us that we need 16,000 new housing units built by 2031. The community told us they need more affordable options, more missing-middle housing, and more housing opportunities in general for families, individuals, seniors and youth of all socio-economic backgrounds. Housing is not just bricks and mortar. It’s about fostering thriving, sustainable communities and neighbourhoods. It’s about taking a large parcel of municipally-owned land and transforming it into the affordable and attainable housing Waterloo residents need." - Mayor Dorothy McCabe This decision another way we're addressing the issue of housing in our community. As the lack of available and affordable housing has become one of America’s defining economic issues, it is increasingly a political problem. Politicians from both parties have found themselves inundated by constituents who have been priced out of ownership, forced into long commutes, and embittered by rising rents and multiplying homeless encampments. #yimby #rentalhousing #affordablehousing Matrix Rental Solutions National Multifamily Housing Council National Apartment Association (Naahq)
