Introducing Ida Hugander, one of our interns, who is spending her summer working with the Analysys Mason team in Sweden. We caught up with her to see how her experience has been so far: Q: What was your most significant learning experience during your internship? Ida: It was working on a report about the Swedish mobile market. I updated data for the major operators and analysed recent trends and regulations in the sector. Additionally, I reviewed the results of the 2023 spectrum auction and identified key takeaways. Although I was initially unfamiliar with the TMT sector, I embraced the challenge and gained a deeper understanding of its complexities. This project not only expanded my knowledge but also enhanced my proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint. Q: Can you describe a project or task you’re particularly proud of? Ida: I am particularly proud of my contribution to a project on equality and sustainability. I conducted research, reached out to potential contacts, and assisted with PowerPoint presentations. The project's goal was to promote equality in the bioeconomy sector. Being part of Analysys Mason’s efforts in these critical areas was incredibly rewarding, as I had the opportunity to contribute to meaningful change. Q: What skills have you developed or improved during your internship? Ida: I deepened my understanding of the tech and telecoms industries and their societal impact. Additionally, I significantly enhanced my technical skills in tools such as PowerPoint and Excel. Q: What have you enjoyed most about working with your colleagues? Ida: I have truly enjoyed the welcoming and supportive atmosphere among my colleagues. From day one, I felt included and valued, which greatly enriched my experience. Engaging in discussions with my colleagues further enhanced my learning journey. Q: What advice would you give to future interns? Ida: Embrace this opportunity for professional growth. Approach your tasks with confidence and don’t hesitate to ask for help!

Sometimes, we often perceive some things to be lengthy and mundane while some other things pass by in a blink of an eye. This can be defined by prospective and retrospective aspects of time. By using The Holiday Paradox applied to my context of being an intern can be used to explain this in detail. A 2 hour travel time to and fro the office might seem excruciatingly long but 4 months as an intern might seem too short. This is time in a prospective overview, in which we are experiencing and thinking of time as we are going through it. However, weeks will go by and suddenly, looking back, the grueling 2 hours travel time holds less of a memory and seems miniscule but the 4 month internship would be something memorable. This is time in a retrospective overview in which we remember time as it passed. For example, if you were told to guess how long you have been reading this post, you could probably come to a fairly confident guess based on the retrospective aspect of time as you would be able to recall the time that has passed. Constructively, we often take too much of our time focusing on the stressful parts of our lives and overlook the good things and it is not until sometime in the future that we ultimately look back and cherish those memories. This, to me, is the illusion of time and begs the question. if we are aware of it, can we change our perspective or is it easier said than done?

Vi har fått en pratstund med Carolina som berättar om sin upplevelse och erfarenhet av den 4 månader långa praktikperioden genom Jobbsprånget. 🔹 Carolina, tell us about your internship – It gives the opportunity to make connections, build relevant experience and get to learn about the Swedish working culture. I’m truly grateful to work as a Business Analyst here at VGS. This role has allowed me to deepen my analytical skills while contributing to meaningful projects. 🔹 What are the main day-to-day responsibilities of this internship? – In my role, I focus on enhancing key reports and tolls for the Product and Order team at Škoda Sverige. I apply my analytical skills to identify and implement improvements in the reporting and analysis processes, aiming to make them more efficient and user-friendly. My responsibilities include regularly updating reports, suggesting and implementing optimizations that can assist the team in making important decisions for the business. 🔹 Can you provide some insights into the company culture? – The people truly make this experience worthwhile. I feel a very collaborative and supportive environment where colleagues are genuinely willing to help each other. I also appreciate the flexibility and emphasis the work-life balance, which allows everyone to perform at their best while respecting personal time. Additionally, I see that people have a lot of autonomy and responsibility and are focused on doing their best to improve and to reach their goals. My colleagues are supportive and open to collaboration, creating a safe space where I can feel comfortable about sharing ideas and asking for help when needed. I feel thankful for being part of such a welcoming work atmosphere. 🔹 What have you gained from the internship, and what have you contributed? – Through this internship I’ve gained valuable insights into a new industry and market which has been an exciting challenge. I’ve also had the chance to practice and improve my Swedish language skills. On my end, I’ve contributed by applying my analytical expertise to enhance the efficiency of reporting and analysis. 🔹 Have you encountered any challenges during the internship? – Absolutely. Navigating a new market has been really challenging. Additionally, working in a new cultural environment with my objective to put my Swedish skills into practice, has really pushed me out of my comfort zone. But these have for sure strengthened my adaptability and critical thinking.

What are you getting if you hire someone with a Bachelor of Arts in European Studies? Since our programme is interdisciplinary and mixes business and politics, there are a lot of options, so it might be better to ask what our graduates CAN’T do, but to narrow it down, we like to share examples. So this week, while we’re on a short holiday at The Hague University of Applied Sciences, we’re sharing stories about students who are doing their mandatory internship, which is a great way to get a sense of what our graduates do and what they have to offer. Today, we hear from Charis Janzen, who recently finished her internship at GoBright, an office innovation company. “I successfully completed my Marketing Internship and I ended it in such a special way: organising the company's Yearly Team Event! I am grateful that I was entrusted with this responsibility amongst many others. I would not necessarily describe my internship as just an internship, but rather an in-depth experience of today's working culture. I was surrounded by the best colleagues and received great guidance. This internship taught me so much about the smart workplace solutions market and the different stakeholders that are involved. It taught me the importance of truly knowing the company you're working for as well as the brand, because that informs the way you communicate. I believe I was wel prepared by European Studies THUAS for this internship and I am also grateful for the knowledge I was given beforehand. Now, I look forward to finishing the last phase of my studies: my thesis.” We wish you luck on that thesis Charis and look forward to seeing you graduate later this year. If you want to know more about what our graduates have to offer, or if you think your organisation would benefit from some European studies interns, check the links in our bio or get in touch at any time.

As the summer internship season kicks off, and we are welcoming our new interns at Michelman & Robinson, LLP, I'm reminded of my own transformative experience as an intern in Germany at the Frankfurt offices of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer over 20 years ago. It was my first international business experience, and little did I know then how much it would shape my personal and professional growth. To all the students embarking on internships this summer, whether close to home or far afield, I'd like to share some reflections from my journey: Embrace curiosity: Your internship is a unique opportunity to learn. Ask questions, seek out new perspectives, and absorb as much knowledge as you can. Curiosity is the fuel that propels growth and innovation. Dare to think big: Bring your best self to work each day and don't hesitate to contribute your ideas. Your fresh insights as an intern can spark meaningful change. Dream beyond the immediate tasks and envision the impact you can make. Connect with others: Your internship cohort and colleagues could become the cornerstone of your professional network. Build relationships, collaborate, and support one another. The bonds forged during this time can last a lifetime. Embrace the challenges: Growth often lies outside your comfort zone. Whether it is navigating a new environment, tackling an unfamiliar project, or communicating across differences, each challenge is a chance to develop new skills and resilience. Looking back, my internship in Germany was a pivotal stepping stone in my career journey. To all the interns of today, I wish you a summer filled with learning, growth, and exciting new horizons. Embrace this opportunity—it could be the start of something extraordinary.
