🔎 Reflections from my latest Keynote Yesterday, I had the immense honour of keynoting a gathering of voluntary and public-sector professionals on behalf of Children & Young People Now. My heart glows as I reflect on the muscles I'm developing, co-designing, co-hosting and following up on a great Keynote! My Young Consultants and I used storytelling, interactive activities, data gathering, and problem-solving to help the audience explore the transformative power of valuing young people's insights, embracing their perspectives, and dismantling our inherent biases. Through compelling stories of innovation and listening—where £50 and creative, modern approaches fill service performance gaps left wide by traditional methods—we celebrated the uncapped potential of youth insight. Our exploration didn't stop at stories. We challenged assumptions, questioned our fears, and crafted a future of genuine collaboration with young people, as experts by living experience. Our ambition was clear: to cultivate creative, modern approaches that ensure young voices are not just heard but are valued and acted upon in partnership. The crux of our discussion centred on actionable insights: -> The undeniable value of "Nothing about us without us." -> The crucial role of inclusive, creative feedback mechanisms. -> Embracing Lundy's Model as our compass for meaningful engagement. -> The importance of transforming insights into tangible changes. And how did we leave our audience feeling? Energised, hopeful, motivated. Words like Optimistic, Uplifted, Inspired, and Empowered echoed through the feedback, painting a vivid picture of an audience ready to embrace change and champion young voices in their work. As we as a sector move forward, I'm eager to carry this energy with us. We at Team Participation People want to continue innovating, listening, and acting. We want to help every voice count, bringing fresh perspectives, new ideas and better, more meaningful decisions to service performance. To those who joined, shared, and played with us, thank you. One Step Closer (OSC)'s Ripplefest revived and energized me! I'm grateful to have contributed to the regenerative thinking around the Advisors table at breakfast. What a dynamic group!! Here are some highlights from the day: ⚫ OSC co-founder Lara Jackle Dickinson kicked us off with her thoughts that we come together in kinship, with shared values and motivations for shaping a better world -- she encouraged us to banish the term "like-minded" from our vocabulary because it is the diversity of our minds, perspectives, and ideas that makes our community so rich. ⚫Opening panelist Carlotta Mast shared a great definition of "love" in the work context: "the deep and unwavering commitment to the flourishing of another human" (from the book Love + Work by Marcus Buckingham). We definitely need more of this in our workplaces! ⚫Panelist Kyle Koehler defined regeneration as "capacity building", and he encouraged company leaders to carefully consider what they are growing (revenue? impact? capability?), and why -- rather than blindly pursuing scaling their businesses without a clear "why". ⚫Session leader Lara Lee reminded us to avoid confirmation bias (gravitating to information we already agree with), and to become more discerning about which paradigm is sourcing our thinking and business practices. ⚫In the session on "greengushing" Julia Collins encouraged authentic storytelling backed by credible data. She compared two approaches to on-pack messaging for the same product -- first by Moonshot and then by Patagonia Provisions. Two compelling ways to inspire action among consumers!
