Last week, IPIFF (International Platform of Insects for Food and Feed)'s Secretary General, Christophe Derrien, and Deputy Secretary-General, Steven Barbosa, met with Mrs Isilda Gomes, President of the @Natural Resources Commission of the European Committee of the Regions. The Committee of the Regions' NAT Commission brings together over 100 mayors, councillors and regional presidents and covers a wide range of topics related to #rural development, #agriculture, and #fishery, amongst others. The Rural Agenda for Europe and public health are the leading policy themes in the current mandate. 🐛 The meeting between the President of the NAT Commission and IPIFF's Secretariat afforded an opportunity to discuss the benefits of the insect-farming sector for Europe's regions. The Secretariat also presented IPIFF's #ContributionPaper towards the Opinion of the Committee of the Regions on 'The Future of the Common Agricultural Policy'. ✅ At IPIFF, we have been actively involved in multiple activities and initiatives related to the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) post-2027, working towards the fair inclusion of insect farmers as part of the CAP. ♻ With its #circular practices, insect farming can have a tremendous contribution to the sustainability goals enshrined in the Common Agricultural Policy. #CAP #CommonAgriculturalPolicy #insectprotein #insectfarming #ipiff #sustainability

Green Manure! Within the MOPS Operational Group, the Green Manure Trials were conducted. Over three years of meticulous experimentation, different combinations of summer and winter green manure mixes were sown and cultivated for 2 to 6 months. These trials showed benefits such as improved weed control and increased populations of beneficial insects to a more diverse soil microbiome and higher organic matter content. Plus, the incorporation of green manure into the soil has shown to accelerate the development of cash crops, leading to earlier and more abundant harvests. By enriching the soil, mitigating weed growth, and fostering healthier crop yields, these trials are paving the way for a greener future in farming. Today's SAIFood blog highlights a recent article I was part of that quantifies that the longer GM crops are produced, the greater the environmental and biodiversity benefits. Current in-crop herbicides are applied at a rate that is 45% lower than in the early 1990s. The environmental impact of these herbicides is 65% lower. GM crops are the most environmentally beneficial way to produce food. https://lnkd.in/dFxbW9ju

You might have guessed that we're pretty proud of our Dairy Research Facility in North-West Tasmania. The work underway here exists for impact. We believe there's no point doing research for it to end up sitting on a dusty shelf. We want our research in the hands of farmers and industry advisers. Earlier this year, we welcomed about 90 of you to annual field day to share updates from a range of research projects. A recording can now be viewed online. It includes: 🌱 An overview of the Dairy Research Facility from our Farm Manager, Andrew Marshall 🌱 Update on the farmlet trials, which are looking for practical solutions to reduce the amount of nitrogen used on dairy farms. Dr James Hill and Pieter Raedts. 🌱 Update on research to improve the proportion of legumes in Tasmanian pastures. Dr Rowan Smith. 🌱 Update on research investigating the use of virtual herding to manage dairy cows. Dr Megan Verdon. 🌱Snapshot of the dairy business benchmarking project. Symon Jones. 🌱 Overview of the Tasmanian Ag Tech Guide. Maria Ortiz, TAS Farm Innovation Hub. 🌱 Industry panel discussion: pasture-based dairy farming - tailwind or headwind? 𝐌𝐲 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐛𝐮𝐠𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐏𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬 Throughout my career, I've utilized pheromones to manage pest populations, and I know that their effectiveness hinges on precise application strategies and accurate identification. ⚠️ Accurate pest identification is a critical factor that cannot be overlooked. 📚Misapplication typically occurs when growers, inspired by the potential benefits of pheromones, acquire and deploy them without a thorough understanding of the target pests. This often results in disappointment, as pheromones are highly species-specific. For instance, managing 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐛𝐮𝐠 requires pheromones tailored specifically to the species present, such as 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐛𝐮𝐠 (𝑃𝑠𝑒𝑢𝑑𝑜𝑐𝑜𝑐𝑐𝑢𝑠 𝑙𝑜𝑛𝑔𝑖𝑠𝑝𝑖𝑛𝑢𝑠), not just any generic hormone. 📚This precision was key in a recent project on a rosemary plantation plagued by mealybugs. With correct species identification facilitated by collaboration with agricultural universities, we implemented a strategy by combining pheromones with yellow sticky boards in enclosures. This approach not only trapped numerous male mealybugs on the first day but also marked a significant turn in managing the infestation when integrated with other organic methods. The effect was surprisingly good. We eradicated nearly 100% of the pests that had been devastating the plantation for years. 📚The impact of pheromones extends beyond field application to economic benefits. Recent studies 📖 underscore their financial advantages: for example, a 2023 study in Costa Rica highlighted how pheromone-baited traps in cabbage fields significantly reduced insecticide use, boosting net profits by USD 1,723 per hectare. In my opinion, the strategic use of pheromones in agriculture represents a profound advancement in our approach to pest management. This method exemplifies how modern agriculture can align with ecological principles while ensuring economic viability. As we refine these techniques further, they become crucial in achieving a balance between effective pest control and the preservation of our environmental resources. #PheromoneIPM #PlantProtection #SustainableAgriculture #OrganicFarming #PestControlSolutions #IntegratedPestManagement #EcoFriendlyFarming #CropProtection #AgTech #GreenhouseFarming #PrecisionFarming 📷 Photo by Emilia Mikulewicz

During my recent BASIS Field Visits as part of my Master’s in Sustainable Crop Production at the University of Warwick, I had the opportunity to observe and study the impact of mealy aphids on oilseed rape crops. These field visits have been incredibly enlightening, offering a first hand look at the challenges faced by crop producers. Mealy aphids, known for their ability to reproduce rapidly and form dense colonies, pose a significant threat to oilseed rape. Their feeding not only weakens the plants but also facilitates the transmission of plant viruses, leading to reduced yields and compromised crop quality. This hands-on experience underscores the importance of integrated pest management (IPM) strategies in sustainable agriculture. Effective monitoring, biological control agents, and selective chemical interventions are crucial to managing aphid populations and mitigating their impact on crops. I'm excited to continue exploring innovative solutions and contributing to sustainable crop protection practices. A big thank you to Rob Lillywhite for facilitating such valuable learning experiences. #SustainableAgriculture #CropProtection #PestManagement #FieldResearch #IntegratedPestManagement #UniversityOfWarwick #AgricultureInnovation
