Ending the year with a reflection on our recent roundtable discussion (can we still call October recent?)   The barriers faced by the industrial clusters aren’t likely to be new news, but we hope our take on solutions gives you food for thought as we approach a new year.   We have seen significant strides made in the sector in 2024 - with political and leadership changes for UK and Welsh Governments, shifts in policy direction and ambition. It feels like there is a willingness to think about things differently and be a little bolder. 2025 needs to be the year we start to see delivery on that political ambition, clarity in policy direction and project delivery. 🌍 The Power of Internal Carbon Pricing: Driving Action Across Sectors As the decarbonization race heats up, internal carbon pricing (ICP) is emerging as a critical strategy for companies ready to lead. By assigning a value to carbon emissions, businesses are aligning their climate goals with tangible, bottom-line decisions. During a panel I moderated in September 2024, I had the privilege of hosting IPUT Real Estate Dublin Ellen McKinney . They shared how their internal carbon levy has created a €7 million transition fund, financing the innovation and skills needed to achieve their Net Zero by 2030 commitment. From construction to supply chain decarbonization, IPUT exemplifies how ICP can future-proof portfolios against transition risks. In the tech sector, Microsoft is a standout leader. Their internal carbon fee, launched in 2012, has driven investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency, while achieving operational carbon neutrality. These cross-sector examples highlight ICP’s versatility as a tool for resilience. Early February 2024, the EU Commission unveiled the highly anticipated Industrial Carbon Management Strategy. It's a significant milestone in the fight against climate change, designed to reduce carbon emissions across the industrial sector. This strategy promises to steer us towards a more sustainable and eco-friendly future. The strategy emphasises carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) technologies, aiming to achieve net-zero industrial emissions by 2050. It's about time that we see such transformative policies being put into action. The UK holds a pivotal role within this framework, ensuring that technological advancements are both innovative and practical. The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) Board of Trustees' published a controversial announcement on the use of carbon credits last week. Green Element Group, which Compare Your Footprint is a part of, uses the Science Based Targets initiative’s (SBTi) Corporate Net-Zero Standard to underpin net-zero and decarbonisation strategies for corporate clients and partners. Our mission is to empower our clients to manage their environmental impacts for a just and sustainable world. The use of carbon credits within the SBTi’s Corporate Net-Zero Standard is not aligned with our mission or the collective efforts to credibly reduce the value chain emissions required to reach net-zero and limit the devastating impacts of global heating. The month of July is five years since the UK became the first major economy to set legally binding carbon budgets, with a target of achieving Net Zero by 2050. As a strategic priority area, the GW4 Alliance is prioritising the transition to a sustainable Net Zero.
