TWO IMPORTANT LIFE LESSONS I LEARNED FROM COCA COLA Coca-Cola is one of the most recognizable brands worldwide. Coca-Cola has been a part of my life for over 40 years. From my childhood to my children, they have always been present. I have learned two very important life lessons from them: **Lesson 1: Be Patient** Coca-Cola was first created by a pharmacist, Dr. John S. Pemberton, in 1886. Later that year, he sold the formula to Asa Griggs Candler, who founded the Coca-Cola Company in 1892. Patience is key. With patience, you can often exceed your own imagination. The currency of patience is time. Give yourself and your products some time. Time allows you to focus, learn, fine-tune, and explore options. Today, Coca-Cola is available in over 200 countries with a diverse portfolio of beverages. **Lesson 2: Always Show Up** On my way home from delivering meat to a client, I saw a large Coca-Cola billboard. It was a striking advertisement that was hard to miss. Despite their success, Coca-Cola consistently shows up in our lives. They ensure we never forget about them. Life will happen. Challenges will arise, and opportunities will come. If you are patient and consistently show up, you will be amazed by the results! What lessons have you learned from big corporations? Starting out, I had no idea just how much I’d grow and not just professionally but personally too. Over these 𝐭𝐰𝐨 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬, I’ve had the chance to: 💡Take on more responsibilities and step out of my comfort zone 💡Make tough decisions that shaped the direction of my work 💡Learn what it really takes to build and grow a brand in a fast-moving industry It hasn’t been easy (FMCG never is!), but this journey has taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of always staying curious because the next big insight could be right around the corner! What did you want to be when you grow up? 🧒 Once I had given up most boys dreams of being a professional sports person ⚽🏀 or racing car driver 🏎️ or fighter pilot ✈️ I realised that I wanted to go into something to do with business 💼. Marketing seemed interesting as it was a combination of strategy and creative ideas to deliver business growth 🧠🎨📊. How did you get into what you do? 🛣️ I did a degree in Marketing at Lancaster University 🎓 and during my studies I completed placements at brand owners and also advertising agencies 🏢🖥️. That definitely helped me confirm that I wanted a career in Marketing. After I left University I joined Pladis (formerly United Biscuits) on their Graduate Training Programme and my career grew from there 📈🍪. What qualifications \ skills do you need to do your job? 🔧📚 Certainly having a strong understanding of the key principles of Marketing is a must and still helps me today 📊🧠. However, I think I am constantly learning 🔄📚. Clearly there has been a big change in the number of channels you can use to advertise to consumers as well as things like e-commerce 📱💻🛒. Being on a Leadership Team of a business also means you need to step beyond your functional capabilities to understand areas such as finance 💰, supply chain 🚚, HR 👥 and more recently sustainability 🌱. Are you more than your job? Yes, I am also a Sommelier! But to be honest, for a long time, I wasn’t sure. When I left my role as Head of Research and Early Development at LEO Pharma, I made a promise to myself: I would dedicate time to learn beyond my expertise in drug discovery, development, and leadership—and to pursue something purely out of passion. In addition to starting my own pharma and biotech consultancy, I’m proud to share that I’ve become a WSET Level 3 certified Sommelier, teaching wine and leading tastings. It’s been a lot of hard work and dedicated wine tasting :) Wine is fascinating because it merges science and the senses—everything from natural conditions and winemaking processes to molecular chemistry (the chemist in me loves this) and the emotional experience it creates. I could talk about it for hours, but I’ll spare you for now! My key lesson: Life is bigger than our job titles. Sometimes we forget to nurture the passions that make us whole. I recently came across an inspiring HBR article, “You’re More Than Your Job: 3 Tips for a Healthier Work-Life Balance” (August 21, 2023), which dives into this very topic. Last Thursday, Zoran Gojkovic and Erik Lund from Carlsberg Group were the gracious hosts for 25 of our students on the BSc in Food and Nutrition, for a fascinating evening in the name of brewing science at Carlsberg Research Laboratories. And what an evening it was! Zoran and Erik guided us through the various landmark discoveries made throughout Carlsberg's history, making clear why Carlsberg is a world leader in brewing, as well as explaining the profound impact the discoveries have had on the creation of present day industries such as biosolutions. Throughout the evening, there were taste tests (and taste quizzes!), scientific explanations, great career advice, and even a visit from Birgitte Skadhauge, Vice President, Carlsberg Group, Carlsberg Research Laboratory.
