Weekly Leadership Quote (US Veteran's Day edition): The first and most important choice a leader makes is the choice to serve, without which one’s capacity to lead is severely limited. -Robert Greenleaf My Take: Ask yourself why you want to be a leader. Who do you serve? Why do you want to serve? If it's because you believe in the greater goal, and you are willing to serve those that share the goal, then you might just be the leader they need. As countless Americans Marines, soldiers, airmen, sailors, and coast guardsmen have done for 248 years, you serve because you believe in the cause, and you believe in the person next to you. Keep leading.

Today in my class "20th Century Naval Strategy & Thought" we were heavily into the "thought." Midshipmen read James Stockdale's "Moral Leadership" and Stu Landersman's "The Damn Exec," and we examined the philosophical underpinnings of effective naval leadership. The Mids really dug in, and started asking tough questions about the texts and about themselves. Where do we experience transactionalism? Transformation? And when Stockdale talks about "the educated leader" what does he mean? (One of the group had a really keen insight that the books Stockdale recommends are far different from the books we find on official military reading lists.) If you're interested in having these kinds of discussions, our book "Developing the Naval Mind" helps guide your group through having meaningful professional discussions and offers readings to get started with (including the two we read today, in full ... not excerpts or pull quotes, full of context and nuance).
