I’m very proud of the work that we do with our students at Baruch. And I’m happy to see it recognized on a large scale (like The NY Times). Because of this, I’d tweak the title of this NY Times article — in my experience, the value of what we deliver doesn’t come from being a “machine.” Though I certainly do appreciate good alliteration in a title! ———————————— We are human – and that is a very good thing in our classrooms. Remembering and honoring our humanity enables sustainable teaching and learning. ———————————— It’s because of the value of human connection in our classrooms that I wouldn’t refer to us being a machine. Humanity is at the core what we do — and vital to us doing it well. Maybe this as a title instead? “Baruch College, a Catalyst for Upward-Mobility.” It may not sound as catchy, but I feel it more accurately describes what I do in my classroom. ———————————— I know I may be way overthinking this, lol. 😂 But as a communication person, I often think deeply when it comes to language. I understand from the research in my field that words matter. ———————————— What do you think? ———————————— How can we teach and learn at a more naturally human (not machine-like) pace? This is what I refer to as sustainable teaching and learning. I explore this question in my Keynote speech on “Rethinking Academic Rigor” where I critique the tradition of academic rigor and offer ways that we can rework our teaching to bring maximum quality and impact with sustainable effort and energy expenditure — in a way that honors our humanity. Here’s the link to “Rethinking Academic Rigor:” https://lnkd.in/eP7PMVPh Because, after all, we are not machines. And this is a good thing.

Do you know someone who thinks that university isn't for them? As part of University Alliance (UK)'s #UniMythsBusted campaign, we're breaking down four common misconceptions about going to university. ◼️ Reason one: Not feeling academic enough Different university courses are taught in different ways, so if students don’t consider themselves to be academic, it doesn’t mean that there isn't a course that suits their skills. Helping students achieve their potential is what we're here to do. Our Centre for Academic Writing offers drop-in services and one-to-one tutorials to help you smash your assignments and exams: https://bit.ly/4emSbgQ ◼️ Reason two - Feeling like you won't fit in Lots of people from different backgrounds thrive at university. In 22/23, 50% of undergraduates had parents or guardians who had never been to university. Coventry University is also ranked number one in the UK for International Student Diversity (QS Europe University Rankings 2024). Plus, Your Students' Union offer a range of societies and clubs to help our students to meet new friends and feel at home. ◼️ Reason three: Being unsure about support At Coventry University, we offer more than student support. We can help students with career support, wellbeing and personal development opportunities. Students also have access to a Success Coach who will get to know them as a person and help them access the services and support they need throughout their time at university. ◼️ Reason four: Having concerns over qualifications and experiences At Coventry University, we believe every student should have the opportunity to reach their potential and succeed, regardless of their background. Our Fair Access Scheme includes a contextualised admissions policy to help identify and support students from a range of backgrounds to gain fair and equal access to higher education. ◼️ Visit https://bit.ly/48CwtV2 to learn more about the #UniMythsBusted campaign. ◼️ Head to https://bit.ly/3CweOCg to find out more about our student support services.

🎓 The Importance of Attendance for Academic Success 📈 There’s an undeniable truth in education: showing up matters. Recent studies have highlighted a strong correlation between student attendance and academic outcomes, particularly at critical points like the GCSEs. The equation is simple but powerful: higher attendance rates = better results. Every lesson is an opportunity for students to build understanding, develop skills, and ask questions that solidify learning. Missed days mean missed moments to engage and grow, which can make a significant difference, especially during exam years. But attendance isn’t just about numbers; it’s about creating habits of consistency, resilience, and commitment. These are not only the building blocks for academic success but for lifelong learning and professional growth. As Dr. Emily Grant, a renowned educational psychologist, once said: “Attendance isn’t just a statistic; it’s the heartbeat of a student’s educational journey. Being present not only nurtures learning but builds essential habits for lifelong success.” As educators, parents, and community members, how can we better support students to value every day in school? Whether through engaging curricula, student support services, or simply celebrating effort and participation, we all have a role to play. Let’s invest in presence, because attendance today is achievement tomorrow. #Education #GCSESuccess #SchoolAttendance #CommitmentToLearning
