From liquiphilic to #superliquiphilic, or liquiphobic to #superliquiphobic surfaces – how to do that? 💧What is hiding behind these Greek technical terms are #wetting properties, and the exact pathways to achieve extremely strong repulsion or wetting of surfaces by water or oils, respectively, attracted over 50 attendees to yesterdays’ Materials IQ workshop in Thun. Materials IQ is a workshop series run by the partners NTN Innovative Surfaces Association , Empa and the Hightech Zentrum Aargau AG with its materials- and nanotechnology platform nano.swiss. 🛩️🦎The term «liquiphobic» was first coined by Dr. Bharat Bhushan. In his keynote on «Lessons from Nature» he showcased a landscape of examples of #bioinspired, mechanically durable and even self-healing superliquiphobic/-philic surfaces. The aim is to solve problems or enhance energy efficiency in mobility and energy technologies. Technically important applications include surfaces with anti-fouling, anti-fogging, anti-icing, oil-water separation, and self-cleaning properties. A common pattern developed in the high-level presentations of Markus Varga,  Patrik Hoffmann and Rainer Kling: While the chemical properties of a surface lay the foundation, advanced #structuring converts it to the next level. Mostly, these nano- and microstructures (which can even be hierarchical) are being applied by #laser technology – a technology that benefits from doubled power and thus, speed, every other year. 🔬The bottom line: Progress in understanding allows for the manufacturing of superliquiphobic or superliquiphilic technical surfaces via targeted large-area structurization, directly or via tools for their replication. Challenges remain to preserve these surfaces during extended operation times, yet we are getting closer to what nature has developed during billions of years. Big congratulations to Robin W., Markus Hofele, Johannes Neuer and Harald Riegel from our institute and Patrick Hegele from the Technische Universität München for this amazing achievement! 🌟 📢 The team has developed a closed-loop controlled laser-based heat treatment with temperature feedback for metal parts produced by the laser powder bed fusion of metals process (PBF-LB/M). Using a TRUMPF scan head the laser was guided in a meandering scanning pattern over the surface of the parts. In a closed control loop, the temperature was continuously monitored by a Sensortherm GmbH pyrometer and maintained at a predefined target value by dynamically regulating the laser power. This innovative method reduces residual stresses 𝙞𝙣 𝙨𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙙𝙨 and therefore displacement after the part break-up. It is remarkable that the process can almost 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 relieve residual stresses in components with a material thickness up to 3 mm and that the displacement after cutting of the support structures is even 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 than after conventional furnace heat treatment. 👏 Congratulations to the team from Aalen University - LaserApplicationCenter (LAZ)! We're excited to celebrate the publication of these outstanding results from SmartPro’s AddFunk project! ❓ The researchers addressed a significant challenge in laser powder bed fusion, a method used to additively manufacture metal components. During this process, the material undergoes extreme temperature fluctuations, causing it to expand and contract – leading to high residual stresses and defects in the final product. Currently, stress relief is mitigated by heat treatment in a furnace, which is an energy-intensive and imprecise solution ♨️ 💫 This project investigated an alternative method. Using a recently developed closed-loop laser-based heat treatment, the researchers guided a laser beam in a meandering scanning pattern over the surface of the component, heating it precisely to a defined surface temperature. The result? Structural irregularities are drastically reduced – ensuring higher quality and more reliable components. 🔦 𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆: 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗟𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝗲𝗱 𝗙𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 Beam shaping technology, like the ring-shaped laser provided by nLIGHT, Inc. , is enabling for significant improvements in 𝗟𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝗲𝗱 𝗙𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗟-𝗣𝗕𝗙). Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have demonstrated how using a ring-shaped beam instead of the traditional Gaussian beam can simultaneously mitigate multiple defects - pores, rough surfaces, and large spatters. This breakthrough not only 𝗲𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 but also allows for thicker layers during manufacturing, 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗽 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁. Recently published technical paper based on research undertaken as part of the FORGE project - now available to read online and download! 'Deposition behaviour of FeCrMnNiCo coatings deposited using mechanically alloyed powder: Comparing Cold Spray, HVOF, HVAF, and Laser Cladding processes - is by authors Deepak Sharma, Ahamed Ameen, Ali Alperen Bakır, Dibakor Boruah, Emily Davison, Krzysztof Wieczerzak, Krzysztof Maćkosz, Alvise Bianchin and Shiladitya Paul - and examines the characteristics of mechanically alloyed (MA) Cantor alloy powder, and the coatings produced from it using various deposition techniques. The EU-funded FORGE project aims to develop cost-effective, protective #coatings that have the necessary chemical stability, hardness and gas barrier properties to make them suitable for use in a range of challenging applications. These coatings will be based on novel, compositionally complex materials, including #metal #alloys and #ceramics.
