IT has failed? Don't tolerate it. Sometimes technical problems are indeed somewhat hidden and not on the surface. Therefore, it's not always easy for decision-makers at the business level to identify factors that have a significant impact on business KPIs in a timely manner. In this customer case, the entire e-commerce site was very slow. We examined the system and immediately identified some weaknesses. The worst was a plug-in that was not orchestrated with the entire system. After the quick fix, the loading time was <1 second.

After reading the peak playbook from Aus Post, there were two data points and some key insights that stood out to me. 1. 76% of customers check a return policy prior to purchasing 2. 37% of online shoppers choose to purchase from one site over another based on the quality of the return options. Returns are integral to the online shopping experience and have a big impact on both the acquisition and retention of customers. Below are a few ways to improve your returns policy heading into peak. ⏲️ Consider extending return times so gifts that aren't opened straight away can still be returned ☑️ Simplify the process either by automation or by keeping the return rate flat or free 📨 Mention your policy either at the checkout or via email to make it easy for your customer to find it 🏃♀️ Ensure to refund your customers quickly. Either by optimising your process or by offering instant refunds Always interested to hear / see what retailers do heading into peak to optimise profit.

As part of my doctoral research on cart abandonment, I came across some insightful data that highlights the key reasons behind it. 48% of customers leave their carts because of additional charges. Another 26% leave because they are forced to create an account. And it doesn't stop there — concerns about payment security, slow delivery, and complicated checkouts are all reasons people decide to not complete their purchases. As business leaders, marketers, and e-commerce enthusiasts, this data is a wake-up call. Here’s how we can tackle cart abandonment: Transparent Pricing: Nobody likes last-minute surprises. Be upfront about shipping and taxes as early as possible. Guest Checkout Options: Allow users to purchase without creating an account. You can always incentivize sign-ups later. Simplify the Process: Remove friction in the checkout experience. Fewer form fields Clear order values Secure payment gateways Speed It Up: Delivery time matters! Customers today want speed and convenience. Partner with reliable logistics providers to reduce delivery times. Offer Payment Flexibility: From multiple payment methods to installment options, meet your customers where they are. E-commerce success depends on the experience.
