Gallup recently released a thought-provoking study on career-connected learning, which highlights the impact of experiential learning on helping young people identify career paths. Ashley Mowreader covers this in a great article for Inside Higher Ed titled "Survey: Experiential Learning Helps Young People Identify Career Paths." Expanding diverse career education opportunities in middle and high schools could be the key to keeping students more engaged and confident in their choices for post-secondary education, apprenticeships, and careers. I've had the pleasure of punting on The River Cam, dreaming of one day sending my children off to Cambridge. But what a costly journey it would be if I didn’t properly prepare them for success before they go! One of the most valuable steps we can take is to encourage shadowing. By shadowing professionals in various fields, our kids can explore careers that truly resonate with their passions before committing to a specific path. This hands-on experience can help them avoid costly detours and ensure they’re pursuing a career that genuinely fulfills them. Let’s help our kids network, connect with professionals, and find opportunities to shadow before they embark on this journey. The more informed they are, the better equipped they’ll be to make choices that lead to both personal and professional success.
