Learn what and engage how and with whom from these communities????? This statement doesn't seem to have much substance. “Absolute equality is not about equal results, but about creating a society that supports all to become their very best selves to benefit a collective community." -Sam Collins III, Juneteenth Legacy Project Co-Chair On June 19, 1865 - a full two years after Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation - Union General Gordon Granger issued General Order No. 3 in Galveston, Texas, proclaiming: “The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor. The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages. They are informed that they will not be allowed to collect at military posts and that they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere.” Since 1866, Black communities, first in Texas and then across the United States, gathered to mark the day that became known as Juneteenth. When Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021, the Nia Cultural Center & Juneteenth Legacy Project unveiled a 5,000-square-foot public art mural called, "Absolute Equality." It overlooks the site where Granger issued General Order No. 3. Reginald Adams was the lead artist. The Reconstruction era was a critical period in American history where millions of Black people sought their rightful place as equal citizens under the law. This announcement came two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth symbolizes the promise of freedom fulfilled for all enslaved individuals in the U.S. and serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for racial equality and justice. By learning from history, we can make more informed choices in the present. Juneteenth reminds us of the progress we have made as a society but also highlights that there is still much work to be done to achieve true equality and justice for all. It's essential to acknowledge the achievements and the challenges we face going forward. While it may be a newer holiday, its importance cannot be understated. Just like other holidays in our calendar, Juneteenth is a time for celebration and reflection, reminding us of the struggles and triumphs that have happened. Juneteenth can be a time to reflect on our past, celebrate progress, and commit to creating a more inclusive and equitable future. As the saying goes, "Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it." We all are responsible for creating a positive culture and safeguarding equity, inclusion, dignity, and respect for all.
