Skills, human capital and the energy transition The energy transition is becoming one of the world’s big industrial trends. It’s being embraced by governments, the energy sector, households, industry and more. But it will only succeed if we have the #skills and #humancapital to drive the #energytransition forwards. Are we on track to upskill and reskill the existing workforce? Are we collaborating across sectors? Is the UK Government Green Jobs Delivery Group working? #humancapital #energytransition #climatechange #climateaction #leadership #management #future #upskill #retrain #relearn #education #apprenticeships #partnerships #industry #renewables #powergeneration #powertransmission #colleges #university https://lnkd.in/egwHe5w6

When researching the #Teesside area, it stood out to me that with the vast deployment of hydrogen infrastructure in the region, there is going to be a demand for skilled professionals, such as welders, engineers or mechanics. According to the Construction Skills Network (CSN), the hydrogen industry anticipates a shortfall of 225, 000 workers across the wider construction sector by 2027. This is a significant figure that emphasises the necessity for apprenticeships and upskilling programmes that incorporate the green skills needed to address the rapidly expanding skills gap within the hydrogen sector. #thoughtoftheday #hydrogen #hydrogenskillsgap #greenenergy https://lnkd.in/eig4F8VE

The Energy Transition - Skills Gaps - Young People At Powering Futures we run a programme to help school students develop their skills and understand commercial applications of sustainability. We've gone from 5 schools in 22/23 to 43 schools in 23/24 to 100+ schools for 24/25. We want to evolve the programme to include routes to careers in the energy transition. To create the best way to do that we need help from industry. If we crack it then everybody wins - businesses, young people and the planet. If you're involved in the transition, and are thinking about skills gaps, then all we ask for now if 15 minutes of your time to hear your thoughts. We work in partnership with ScottishPower to support students entering work through the Year in Industry programme (YINI). ScottishPower gain access to dedicated, diverse and highly prepared students which add value to their existing workforce, while students learn a range of skills to support professional development and growth at the beginning of their careers. “The energy sector is at the heart of the UK’s net-zero agenda, and nurturing future talent is essential for the innovations and solutions required to reach this goal. At ScottishPower we view the YINI programme as more than a chance for young professionals to gain experience; it is a critical investment in skills that will shape a sustainable future.” - Social Projects & Sector Education at ScottishPower #STEM #FutureWorkforce #TalentPipeline #YINI #Skills #sustainableFutures #Innovation

A few weeks ago our Technical Director Christopher O'Keeffe took part in an important panel discussion on the topic of the built environment and decarbonisation, as part of Future Leap's Festival of Sustainable Business. Here were the key takeaways: - There is a significant skills and resource shortage when it comes to ongoing work to decarbonise UK energy. - Yes this is a short term problem, but also presents an opportunity to apprentices, graduates and existing trades who are willing to upskill. - The onus is on those of us in the industry to promote the scale of the opportunity and attract the right people into these roles; building a workforce for the future. - This workforce should be inclusive and diverse to maximise its effectiveness. All of the above, is what we’re trying to tackle through the ThermaMech Early Careers Programme. Raise awareness of the opportunities across Green Skills, attract the right people, and keep them through rigorous training and development. Thanks to Future Leap Network and all parties for organising and providing a forum for us to have these important conversations. #GreenSkills #Sustainability #Collaboration

Interesting article in Utility Week by Ben Hargreaves on the issue of skill gaps in the energy and utility sectors. Well worth a read if you are working in those sectors. In summary: Urgent Demand for Skilled Workforce > The energy and utility sectors are facing an acute shortage of skilled workers, jeopardizing the ability to scale and upgrade infrastructure. Strategic Reskilling and Upskilling > Addressing the skills gap requires a strategic approach to reskill and upskill the existing workforce, with cross-sector collaboration on competency frameworks. Standardized Competency Frameworks > Developing and adopting standardized competency frameworks across industries will enable easier transition of workers between sectors, enhancing workforce flexibility. Enhancing Apprenticeship Programs > The effectiveness of the Apprenticeship Levy in energy needs reevaluation, especially to better support younger entrants and those without traditional academic qualifications. Attracting Young Talent > Positioning the energy sector as an environmental leader and a provider of long-term career opportunities is crucial to attracting the next generation of workers. Unsurprisingly, we are picking up on the competency frameworks element! At Lexonis, we have invested heavily in the design of comprehensive skill and competency frameworks and job taxonomies. In fact, we are currently working on v2.0 of our Green Energy skill and job definitions. Navigating the Skill Gap in Energy Transition 🌍 As the UK's energy sector shifts towards renewable sources, a critical gap emerges - the scarcity of skilled professionals ready to drive this change. How do we tackle it? Firstly, the landscape is transforming. Renewable energy projects are springing up at an unprecedented rate, yet the workforce equipped to manage, innovate, and sustain this growth isn't keeping pace. From engineers to technicians, the demand far exceeds the supply. It's imperative we invest in education and training. Partnerships between the industry and academia can create tailored courses that arm the next generation with the necessary skills. Apprenticeships also play a key role, providing hands-on experience. Beyond training, the energy sector must become more appealing. A clear path for progression, competitive salaries, and a focus on inclusivity can attract a diverse pool of talents. Let's not forget about the retired experts whose mentorship can bridge the gap. Addressing the skill shortage isn't just about filling positions. It's about ensuring the UK maintains its competitive edge and meets its carbon-neutral goals. This is about future-proofing our economy and our planet. So, what's your take on this? Have you witnessed the effects of the skill gap first-hand or do you have ideas to combat it? Drop your thoughts below! 👇 #EnergyTransition #SkillGap #RenewableEnergy

If the UK wants to grow the hydrogen sector it should encourage high value manufacturing and associated jobs to remain in the UK. We have big plans to support and maintain the projects we build in the UK with people local to the region, as well as growing our already award winning apprenticeship scheme. There is a huge amount for the UK to win here, equally there is a lot to lose if those jobs and skills are all offshored. #madeinsheffield #ITMPower https://lnkd.in/dwi-zwNT
