Yet another incredibly important day of joint Network Rail train planner, Route access planning and delivery alongside TOC train and possession planners training at Chinnor. These established joint planning community owned courses enable each of these teams to understand how their decisions impact on other functions, the constraints within which they work, and their organisations objectives. All part of an industry coming together to make optimised whole-system engineering and possession delivery decisions.
Great idea, it would be great if we did something like that on the Kent and Sussex routes
An excellent initiative. Explaining processes and procedures in a classroom is all well and good but you cannot beat getting out there and seeing how's it's done 'on the ground'.
Using heritage railways is great way to enable staff to explore scenarios which are not possible elsewhere. We are using one in Northampton for a series of courses for engineers.
Will this mean that the planners actually will go on track and get familiar with it ahead of planning or it will be done from the desk. Will these planners involve the people who work on the track and are affected by the planning!
Would you trust the gentleman holding the paperwork with a possession? 😂
I’m rather tempted to submit an application for a Chinnor course one of these years Mr. P! Always good to enrich one’s learning I feel 🙂
This was eye opening to all the different aspects of possession planning through to what goes on on the day, , it was great to chat to colleagues across the industry and it was fun!
I attend a similar day at the Epping and Ongar Railway back in 2014, very useful and informative day when i worked in ops planning in MK. Hope it was a productive day and great to get out and about and experience operations in person.
Very much enjoyed this a few years ago, learnt a great deal and recommend it as mandatory for anyone working in planning!

2moSomebody please tell me why I’m seeing people on (what I’m assuming) is Network Rail infrastructure, even though they’re behind a marker board who aren’t head to toe in full hi viz clothing?
