Must read this if you are a #geotechnicalengineer and you are working with #cofferdams and #deepexcavations in #marineconstruction. Attention, do not use hydrostatic water pressures in the ground, always run an analysis using a #groundwater flownet analysis. If you assume hydrostatic water pressures you will be overestimating the resisting pressures within the #excavation. This can lead to seriously overestimating your available wall embedment safety factors and can further lead to excavation collapse. I will be describing such a case in our upcoming workshop New York University on May 24th. 𝐑𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐫𝐞𝐚:   - Divide total load by soil bearing capacity:    - 509,850 ÷ 1800 = 28.325 m² 4. 🛠️ Standard Penetration Test (SPT) in Soil Investigation:- A Key to Safe Foundations! 🌍🏗️ In geotechnical engineering, determining the Safe Bearing Capacity (SBC) of soil is crucial for designing stable and secure foundations for any structure. One of the most widely used methods for this is the Standard Penetration Test (SPT). Let's dive into the details! ⬇️ 📏 Procedure of SPT: 1. Drilling a Borehole: A borehole is drilled up to the desired depth using rotary or percussion drilling techniques. 2. Driving the Split-Spoon Sampler: A split-spoon sampler is placed at the bottom of the borehole and driven into the soil using a hammer weighing 63.5 kg, dropped from a height of 750 mm. 3. Counting Blows: The number of hammer blows required to drive the sampler 150 mm is counted. The process is repeated for the next 300 mm penetration, and the number of blows for the last 300 mm is recorded as the N-value. 4. Soil Sample Collection: Samples are retrieved from the split-spoon for visual classification and laboratory analysis. 5. Repeating the Test: This process is repeated at various depths to understand the soil profile. 🔍 Key Insights: The N-value gives an indication of the soil's density or strength. Typically, higher N-values indicate denser soils, which can safely bear greater loads. 🧮 Determining Safe Bearing Capacity: The N-value is used to calculate the SBC using empirical correlations. Here's a simplified approach: For cohesionless soils (sands), SBC is calculated using formulas derived from SPT results and factors such as depth, water table, and type of soil. For cohesive soils (clays), SPT results can be correlated with undrained shear strength to estimate SBC. 🏗️ Why is this Important? Knowing the SBC is vital in preventing foundation failures like excessive settlement or structural collapse.
