Is this the same in Asia during Chinese New Year? Whether out of poverty or virtue, many of us spend much of the year reining in our appetites to save our pennies and our health. But at Christmas many of us put our worries aside and go wild in an orgy of lavish gifting, extensive travel and a gluttonous feeding frenzy. This carnival of consumption has a cost: not just to our wallets and our waistlines, but also to the climate. https://lnkd.in/gdwCnnzt?

Teaching individuals and teams about sustainable gastronomy can give them skills to eat more mindfully. Mindful eating can connect people to the land they’re on and bring joy. Food is so much more than nutrients and energy.

CLIMATE CHANGE FACETS: THE DEVELOPING WORLD CONUNDRUM The words & recommendations of this post are perfect but in a world with about 1/2 of the population suffering from some level of malnutrition ("the forgotten ones"), with most of whom going to bed hungry, these statements, unfortunately, become innocuous After working for some 3 decades directly with people in various developing countries, East and West (not as a diplomat in an airconditioned comfortable house and bulletproof car, although many of those I personally met) one realizes not only the impossibility of the majority to improve their food source quality but also, and even much worse to adapt to our up-trending, momentum, #climatecrisis and change their usual living standards with aged cars, equipment, technology, heating, piling littering etc (dare to watch this New Delhi fact video "Walking Extremely Busy Streets/ India Walking Tour: https://lnkd.in/dggCtA5g) One can see environmental pollution (landfills, sewages, black-smoking cars etc) and destruction everywhere (nature and forests) besides a population multiplication (which will demand the same of our goods to live), which scientists and#climateexperts, in most of their time, do not also experience hands-on from within their pleasant clean airconditioned clean labs, houses and cars The vast majority (including most citizens in developed countries) are sitting in their Ivory Towers suggesting that the "real world" changes their habits and not much willing to give up theirs Unfortunately, outside the big-money fossil fuel industry clan, most low-income people can not afford, now nor in the foreseeable future, the make the necessary transition to try to reach these noble "green" goals In fact the growth tool will further exacerbate the #climateunbalance As I always say, it is NOT ONLY CO2 emissions, it is an entity degradation and imbalance that compounded with CH4 & N2O, the 3 "thieves" #greenhousegases combine to make all the #climatechange that we are experiencing With CO2 to top one of course, but "Carbon-zeroing-it" will not be enough The good-hearted experts must wake up to the "invisible" other raw facts that are also contributing to #climatechange of which they are not comprehensively being sufficiently accounted for

With the people I talk to I really see this becoming more and more of a topic. Not just for sustainability reasons, but also health. But unfortunately we still need to do a lot of work to make food value chains more transparent. For most of us it is still impossible to tell where our food is from and how it got to our plates. Where did it come from, how and where was it processed and how fresh is it really?? At Urban Greens we aim to be fully transparent about the origins of the food we sell. Whether it is from our own aquaponics production units or from our future growers and suppliers. Food that allows you to make sustainable choices while being as fresh and tasty as can be! It won't change the world, but it is at least one small step in allowing our customers to make more sustainable gastronomy decisions. And who knows, maybe inspire a whole lot more!

Earth Overshoot Day 🌍 A sad day where we've used up our planet's natural resources and we're living on borrowed time... Individually and collectively, we can do so much more than just recycling our waste and going to work by bike. Our food behaviour is where we can make a gigantic difference. Did you know that up to 2.000l of water is needed to grow 1kg of avocados? And that before the avocado ends up on our toast, it has already travelled somewhere between 1.500 and 15.000km? Why do we throw away fruit and vegetables that don't look perfect? Are we, humans, perfect? Nothing wrong with a twisted carrot. Quite the contrary, it looks like it wants to give you a hug. And do we really need all that beef? Our cardiovascular health doesn't think so and neither does our planet. A piece of meat can be rather tasty, but not the mindless production at the expense of our Mother Earth. Oh, and for the Belgians reading this: our Country Overshoot Day was 23 March 2024... Let's #movethedate by being more conscious about the food on our plate. https://lnkd.in/ekrpuBzc

🌍✨ Happy World Earth Day! 🌱 Taking care of the Earth takes care of humans too! 👨👩👧👦 💡 Here's what we can do: - Organize clean-up events 🌱 - Hold healthy eating workshops 🍏 - Educate on environmental topics 🌍 - Plant trees for cleaner air 🌳 - Advocate for sustainable policies 📢 - Integrate nature into health promotion 🌿 - Collaborate for change 🤝 ❔Did you know? In Indiana, asthma affects over 11% of adults and 8% of children. Supporting the Earth can improve conditions by reducing air pollution and allergens, making breathing easier for those with asthma. #EarthDay #CHWs #Sustainability #Indiana #WorldEarthDay

Earth Day serves as a powerful reminder of our shared responsibility to care for the Earth and prevent further destruction of its natural resources. Taking successful climate action requires innovative, community-centered solutions that make a tangible impact. With each stove we provide, we create lasting change by promoting the use and evaluation of our stoves' performance, as well as offering ongoing support to families to ensure the adoption and longevity of our stoves. Our sustainable initiatives not only transform lives but also protect the future of our planet. Each stove plays a pivotal role in preventing deforestation in Central America and significantly reducing carbon emissions from cooking. By ensuring equitable access to our Ecocina and Justa cookstoves, we are curbing open-fire cooking practices, halving fuel use, and preventing the release of 12 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere with each stove. #saferkitchens #cleancooking #climateaction Join us and our partners, SumUp CHRISTADELPHIAN MEAL-A-DAY FUND OF THE AMERICAS INC Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association Hearth, Patio and Barbecue Association of Canada in making a difference today, https://lnkd.in/gKvWaEcH

Is climate change reshaping our Christmas dinners? Have you prepared your Christmas meals yet? What’s on your menu? Roast turkey? Cranberry sauce? Chestnuts? You may have noticed these festive staples are pricier or harder to find this year. That’s not just inflation. Climate change is playing a big role in reducing yields and disrupting production. Here’s how: #Turkey * Hotter summers stress turkeys, causing weight loss. * Rising gas costs make incubators more expensive. * Wild turkey populations dropped 18% in the US from 2014-2019 (The Wildlife Society). #Cranberries * Scorched by hotter, drier summers. * More prone to fungal diseases and rot. * Bees struggle to pollinate in heat, while pests thrive. #Chestnuts * Drought slashes yields by up to 90%. * In Greece, chestnut harvests could fall to 15,000 tonnes in 2024 - half the recent average. What can we do as consumers? We know carbon emissions are driving climate change. Did you know 80% of emissions come from “things we make, buy, use, and throw away”? According to researchers Lucy Wishart, Kristina Auxtova, PhD, and Stephanie Schreven, extending the life of what we buy can make a huge difference. Adopting a circular economy, like shopping #secondhand, could reduce our footprint this holiday season. Learn more about the climate’s impact and solutions in the comments! #Christmas #ClimateChange #FoodSustainability #CircularEconomy #SustainableShopping (Image copyright: Rumman Amin)
