“[T]hink about your audience. Your audience is not everybody, no one's is. Who is prone to listening to your music. Go where they are.” Bob Lefsetz The Lefsetz Letter Understanding that your audience is NOT everyone requires acknowledging that your service or product is NOT everything to all people. Know what you’re offering and how it’s different from what your competitors are offering. Know your audience and the issue that might make them care about you. Then figure out how to demonstrate that you understand their needs and have the experience and expertise to help. And, as Bob Lefsetz says, "go where they are" and show them. There's more than one way to make that happen. We recommend creating high-value content for your (tightly-defined) audience. Need help creating content or defining your audience? Reach out to see if our approach is a good fit. (Bob Lefsetz is a music industry lawyer who isn’t afraid to share his opinions about the music industry. (Among other things.) He’s been blunt enough that apparently one of Taylor Swift’s songs is about him, and not in a good way. Or maybe not. You can find out more about his writing here: https://lnkd.in/eCVbXZU6. It’s a great read if you’re a music fan. )

Millions of dollars are left on the table at galas across the country for one reason: 𝗣𝗢𝗢𝗥 𝗦𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗗. From large galas to intimate events, I’ve seen sound be an issue and result in organizations losing $$$. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 3 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀? • 2 speakers close to the stage are too loud for those sitting close, too soft for those in the back • Relying on a venue's in house sound system and not bringing in a professional AV person. • Relying on the DJ/Band to handle sound for your event. They're going to optimize sound for their music, not your program, different objectives. SO, have a system with plenty of speakers that will cover the entire room. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗯𝗮𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺? • When people can't hear the emcee, speakers, or auctioneer, they talk to their neighbors. • Folks aren't going to bid on items when they don't know the amount they're bidding. • When sound is bad it reflects poorly on the entire event and organization. 𝗥𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆. 𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱! Any other issues you've seen impact the bottom line? I'd love to hear ⬇️

My other band should be better… Good to see them, oh my God! 10 years ago noone could imagine that they are not ridiculous but amazing musicians. Of course they did not start the industry that time, they were creating music in high school already, but I guess in the school people are surprised as well how far they flied from start point. Crowd loves them, we are already good in radios, for advertisements, we do not need to emphasize ourselves everywhere, our names, personally also are known. Guys are such happy what I have never seen before. I am also satisfied but honestly I am a bit tired as well. Long years, have result but sometimes I think about that I would not start everything, every steps from start point by others. That is why I was thinking for long days last week about my other band. They are fresh, well-known, and have many possibilities – but honestly they have long period on front of them until they become similar to these guys. I see current situations everywhere, probably as I have more practice, life is faster it would be less than 10 years but when I see current one on stage realized that 2 of members should start to teach the other band members. The practice is in their hand, the situations are and can be similar and I add new things what are brand new circumstances nowadays. Both of them have free capacity continuously I just need to arrange meetings, points, milestones for them. Great professionals, great people, like each other now they can start to cooperate soon. Of course noone in the industry needs to know how they develop themselves, how they are developed by me, to sum up I arrange continuous workshop for them in the house. This way I start to think about further issues, other roles, advertisements, solutions, it is sure that I will have more capacity and free round. 3 of us can win – I am lucky that there is no competition between the 2 groups - this stays in this form. #gecsebrigitta

Calling all Eventprofs, can I address a misconception…? Why do many event organisers assume choirs are cheap to book? As the musical director of a gospel choir, I've been tagged in numerous 'recommendation' posts seeking choirs for events, only to be met with shock when I mention our fee. It's often followed by remarks like, "Can't you do it for £100-£200?" Yet, there's usually no hesitation in budgeting appropriately for musicians in a band….? 🤷🏽♀️ While community choirs may accept minimal fees (you’ll always find groups to do it cheaper, and maybe this is where the problem stems from), this shouldn't devalue professional singers. If there's a budget for a band, there should be one for pro choirs too. We invest time and effort in rehearsals for your event, so it’s only fair. It's time to challenge the assumption that choirs perform for free or next to nothing. ———————— I'm Sharon Stacey, a voice coach and musical director. We talked to Steph at The Surly Wench to find out everything you need to know about booking a show with them, and here's what we learned: What is the best way to get in contact with you about booking? Surlywenchpub@yahoo.com Do you require a link to music the performer/band makes? Yes please Do you require a media package? No media package required Should a performer/band reach out to you directly, or do you prefer managers to contact you? I prefer to work with the performers What can performers/bands expect in terms of payment? Bands split a door cover How far out should performers/bands reach out about booking? At least 1 month Are performers required to fill the rest of the bill? I prefer this. We like to keep it at 3 bands total. 2 is fine, just no more than 3 Are performers directly required to sell tickets ahead of time? No Is there anything else folks should know about the process? Anything we missed? Performers must be 21+ including any friends or merch people. 🎧 Listening to The Cure last night's Live Lounge, contemplating on a few things that likely mean this band - unlike some of the others - is still going strong and remains relevant 40 years after they formed. 💪🏼 1️⃣ = Craftmanship 🪓 -> after 40 years in the business, they still sound great - clearly, a considerable amount of effort, practice and refinement has gone into this, especially considering they aren't spring chicks anymore 🐣 2️⃣ = Authenticity 💫 -> the new tracks sound unmistakably The Cure, but are in no way repetitive, tired or dull - they are staying true to who they are, and this matters. 3️⃣ = Innovation 🤓 -> yes, you can tell it's them for sure, but they also manage to sound fresh, different and new - while they're not reinventing the wheel or themselves like some artists try to do (which is fine too), 👻 I've not listened to The Cure in the last 30 years at all (aside from occasional track 6Music plays), but am utterly enjoying going back in time (while remaining firmly in the present) today. The link is in the comments, in case you want to do the same 🤗

I find it difficult to understand why malls, restaurants, and the like feel the need to "pump" loud and annoying music into public spaces at this particular time of year. Times when many people need peace and quiet. My family, friends, and I will not simply return to any facility that exposes us to unnecessary noise. We understand the dangers that prolonged noise exposure can cause. We recently visited a complex in Cape Town. The sound of the crowd of people, as well as the loud and annoying music, was deafening. Even some of the staff members had to bend over the counter and shout to be able to communicate with us properly. When I asked if the loud music could please be turned down a bit, my request was summarily dismissed. The supervisor simply said, No, it is not possible because it forms an important part of the customers' "festive spirit." I am convinced that, for example, people play loud music in restaurants so that visitors can eat faster, communicate less, and leave the restaurant faster. This naturally results in a faster turnaround time on tables, and thus more people can be served; consequently, those involved make a greater profit. As a cochlear implant user, I find high levels of noise disruptive and unpleasant. How is anyone supposed to have a calm conversation in noisy environments? Perhaps few facilities these days provide quiet environments where people can meaningfully communicate because many are busy on their cell phones and seemingly don't have much to say to each other. It is also extremely difficult to legally determine when loud music and/or noise levels in public centers are illegal. The question is: How does loud music affect you? Does it affect you at all? Do you avoid restaurants where music is played too loudly? I avoid such places because I want to protect myself. When I am exposed to loud, repetitive, conflicting, or competing sounds, it causes anxiety. Share your views with us, please. Painting by #faniedreams

Truth – Beauty – Goodness Jax Amadio from Pierced Poets Productions seeks these three things in everything he does. These are the things that make life worth living and business worth doing. Pierced Poets Productions is the full-service events labor team. Concert venues, production locations, and anywhere else that calls for creating a great environment to put on a great show that’s where you’ll find Jax and his team of over 900 making a difference. As you can imagine, there are a lot of spinning plates in the air for Jax and his team to keep spinning. How do all these plates stay up in the air you may ask. The answer, according to Jax, is simple . . .communication & trust. The way Jax sees it, communication is the key to learning the expectations and gaining the trust of the people you just met and must work with. Those things and proving your good at what you do, but that comes later. Jax asks a lot of questions. I mean . . . a lot of questions. Jax is the point person for getting the answers to all the right questions. And some other questions too, just for good measure. He even calls the locations some acts have just travel from to get any insight he can to create a better experience for the everyone involved. Communication is how you get things done with that many people involved. You need good communication - there is no room for bad communication. It’s hard enough to trust someone you just met let alone have to work with for the next 12 hours. When you meet someone just 12 hours before the show goes on, you must communicate and delegate. That’s exactly what Pierced Poets Productions does. They are building a reputation for getting things done and done really well. The collective team his hyper focused on proving their value with every production, every venue, every experience. They are focused on giving the people the best show possible. There is a lot that goes into your local concert or production. From the expectations of the traveling act coming to town, to the venues & locations, to the people pulling it all together, there is a lot going on to make it all come off seamless to the audience. It is Pierced Poets Productions that is the cohesive connection between the traveling artists and the local team that makes it all look and sound good. So, the next time you are at a show, tip a cup to those faceless bodies making all the magic possible. Those are Jax’s people. This was a great conversation. With Coachella’s 2nd weekend now at a close and the tents being brought down, many are wondering about the reasons behind their reported lowest ticket sales in 10 years. At Savanta, we polled 2,000 U.S. consumers on live events, Coachella, and personal spending to gain an insight on what seems to be a broader trend. Our research suggests the lack of interest could be reflective of a shift in value perception, with 69% of respondents naming price as a most important factor when deciding to attend a music festival. This trend seems to be rooted in a current cutback on consumer spending, with 45% of respondents reported to be spending more on essential items (i.e. utilities and health care) while 44% indicated they’re spending less on non-essential items (i.e. eating out). Check out my article below! https://lnkd.in/eU6fcH3i
