Here’s a brilliant Latin American campaign you probably haven’t seen 🌞 Quilmes (Beer brand) “Maltas Amigas”/ “Friendly Malts” by La América agency, Argentina. This ad shows a woman struggling to tell her best friend that she doesn’t want her to move abroad and leave her all alone. But how? How can one communicate such a thing? Such a complex feeling? Simple, with a burp :) Then, the ad closes: “Introducing the new Quilmes Double Malt. It’s special because it’s made with two “friendly malts”. And here, in the only country where friendship is worth twice as much.” 🤯 Why I love it? 1. Because of the concept - Quilmes brewed a new beer with 2 “friendly malts" (friendly malts translates into "Maltas AmigAs" - female friends). And turned the occasion into an opportunity to celebrate female friendships. 2. Because of the cultural impact - Beer ads often portray friendship between men, not women, especially not burping women :) 3. Because of the beautiful absurd glorification of the burp, and the talking alien tattoo. People and events are connected more than ever. We have ‘major’ global sport events almost every year and local big sports events draw tremendously higher spectators than in the past. Isolationism and political tension could influence the hype for the Olympic as well as Euro2024. Coca Cola is never short of PR crisis. In Euro 2020, when Ronaldo shelved the two bottles of Coke away, stock lost near 2% at USD4bil. Why put Coke in front of a anti- carbonate guy? And now this fiasco in China, between the different "status" on stage, WANG, the Olympic pingpong champion, who is also China's spokesperson, while YANG, the global brand spokesperson. Wang was shelved aside on stage by the China Chief Marketing Officer, Jennifer Antczak, to make way for Yang, a singer. An uproar rose in favour of the champion, naturally. Frankly, I didn't know who Yang is, until now. I didn’t expect to be this moved by a basketball team—but the Tasmania JackJumpers aren’t your average team. I walked into the room not knowing much about basketball. But by the time I left, I was deeply inspired—and even wondering if I should be encouraging my boys to try out the sport. What really hit me was hearing their Head Coach, Scott Roth and Captain Clint Steindl share their heartfelt experiences about their journey to success. The connection was so real, it nearly brought me to tears. It reminded me that no matter what team or field or industry you’re in, it’s always the people who make the difference. And that’s exactly what the Tasmania JackJumpers are doing—they’re showing up for each other, on and off the court, with grit and humility. The Tasmania JackJumpers are making history as the first Oceania club to compete on the global stage at the FIBA Intercontinental Cup 2024. But what really stood out wasn’t just their game—it was their character, their community spirit, and how they rally together. After hearing their story, I can't wait to see how that same heart will translate when they hit the court.  AustCham Singapore had the privilege of hosting a roundtable with a number of the Tasmania JackJumpers team members and business leaders from the AustCham Community. I was struck by three key things about their approach to success: Crystal-clear culture: Inclusion, accountability, and a safe space for vulnerability. Every player, whether on the court or off, knows their role and how it contributes to the collective. It’s not just about winning—it’s about showing up for each other. What would you do if your national team lost a game? After attending the recent ASEAN Cup match at the National Stadium in Singapore with my boys, I witnessed something truly heartening from our supporters. Despite the loss, our fellow supporters continued to cheer as they exited the stadium. An unusual yet uplifting sight, especially in a culture where many might head straight for the carpark to avoid delays. The #relentless spirit of the fans reminded me of a few key lessons that resonate beyond sports: 1. Recover and refocus quickly: When setbacks occur, it is essential to bounce back and stay aligned with your original goals. Just as the supporters and the team remained #motivated to push for the semi-finals, we too must #persevere when faced with challenges. 2. Lean on your community: Achieving any goal takes a village. The #strength and #encouragement from families, friends, and communities are invaluable. Take time to acknowledge and appreciate their unwavering support. 3. Be #bold in action: In moments of defeat, retreating is the easiest option—but progress requires boldness. Taking #proactive steps in the face of adversity builds #resilience and strengthens resolve. This Thursday’s match is sold out, and while I won’t be there in person, my family and I will be cheering on from home.
