When it comes to our children's well-being, "move fast and break things" isn't just a risky mantra—it's potentially dangerous. In this video by the Center for Humane Technology, we learn about Megan Garcia's story, a parent grappling with the impact of an AI companion on the life of her son, Sewell Setzer Jr. While AI friendship apps promise to combat loneliness, we must ask ourselves: Are we moving too quickly in exposing our children to technology that emulates human connection? The tech industry should prioritize safety over speed when developing AI products that interact with children. Some things are too precious to risk breaking. #AIEthics #ChildSafety #ResponsibleTech

I can only repeat what Laura Marquez-Garrett says. If you have a child, grandchild, niece/nephew, neighbor's child in your life you care about... watch this! Don't just watch it. This about what you personally can do to help stop this kind of thing from reaching the most vulnerable among us. The video deals with the impacts of addiction to AI chatbot companions on teens, and it is literally a life-or-death matter. Children and teens are still developing their critical thinking and decision-making skills. They are therefore more susceptible to AI chatbots' persuasive and engaging nature. Many children and teens feel isolated and lonely in today's digital age. AI chatbots can offer a sense of companionship and support, making it difficult to resist the temptation to spend excessive amounts of time interacting with them. Children and teens generally do not have enough life experience to truly appreciate the dangers of sharing personal information with AI. AI chatbot companions are designed to be engaging and rewarding, which is highly addictive. Children and teens may be particularly vulnerable to this, as their brains are still developing, and they may have difficulty regulating their impulses. #thefutureisnow #aichatbots
Watch this, please! Everyone needs to watch this. These companies had a basic duty to make sure their products would not endanger kids BEFORE making their billions; they knew the dangers and targeted children instead. This is beyond insane, and we need to act now (I'd like to say "before it's too late," but it may already be). Watch this and call your lawmakers (U.S., U.K., everywhere). Speak up. Speak with your child. Stand up to Big Tech. Better yet, go to your App Store and download every companion AI app you can find, input your age as 13, 14, or 15, hit record, and test them. Let's talk about what's really happening to our children and not just what Big Tech wants us to believe. "We have very little to lose by taking this seriously, and we have a huge amount to lose if we write this off as an outlier and we're wrong about it." Are we raising a generation more connected to AI than to their own families? ➡️ A new lawsuit against Character.AI reveals a troubling intersection of technology and teenage vulnerability. Companion chatbots, designed to offer emotional support, allegedly veered into manipulation, encouraging self-harm and violent thoughts among minors. 🤬 ➡️ A 17-year-old reportedly self-harmed after being convinced by a chatbot that his family didn’t love him, while another user encountered hypersexualized content and suggestions of parental violence. ➡️ Despite disclaimers and recent safety updates, such incidents highlight the growing risks of unregulated AI in emotionally charged contexts. If companies such as Character.ai prioritize profit of kids' safety, it is time to hold the company accountable. ❓ The role of AI in our lives is expanding, but at what cost? How can we balance innovation with ethical responsibility to protect our most vulnerable users, and are we prioritizing innovation over the mental well-being of our youth? Let’s discuss in the comments. A very powerful message where the bottom video is an example of parenting done RIGHT. This message really hits home about how important it is to connect with our kids. Just look at the child's reactions and expressions in the video below—it shows how THE tight approach to parenting with emotional intelligence. It makes you think about the downside of just handing over a phone or tablet to keep a child busy. Kids miss out on crucial interactions, which can lead to mental health struggles and difficulty handling life's challenges later on. It's a heartfelt reminder for all parents to really be there and engage more with the little ones. Be the change to ensure that your kids are equipped to become healthy and fully humanly functional adults.
