Thought experiment: I'm giving you $100 million to invest in early-stage startups. You have access to a global pipeline of all pre-product, pre-revenue deals. But here's the twist: You won't interact with or choose specific investments. Instead, you get to specify a single "thing" to look for. You'll end up with $1 million stakes in the 100 ventures that best exhibit this quality, according to a random panel of investors. You have 30 seconds, or I take back the money. What's your thing?

I've analysed the responses to this post and found the following distribution: -> 50% emphasised impact, with one-third of this group focusing on ventures led by women and other under-represented groups. -> 42% emphasised investibility, with the majority highlighting founder traits (logical for the pre-product/revenue scenario given). However, the data left me curious about the potential overlap between these groups, either consciously or subconsciously. For example: - How many of those emphasising founding team diversity or other impact outcomes also viewed these as significant business opportunities? - How many of those focusing on founders passionate about solving specific problems envisioned significant impact from these endeavours? Personally, I am motivated by ventures that create a virtuous cycle, where impact directly drives business outcomes, and business outcomes drive further impact. Then again, I'm told I'm an overthinking idealist. And that wasn't one of the founder traits people mentioned :)

Thank you UNCHAIN Festival for inviting me to talk about startups and investments During the conversation it came to me that the venture investing is in a paradox - while the cost to build tech companies dropped dramatically, seed financing round are consistently growing. it leadsme to think that there's room for a different model of stratups in emerging ecosystems where you don't copy the silicon valley model but build cost effective startups to be sold for attractive multiples in their own economies. These companies will be the seed for future entrepreneurs, creating a strong ecosystem

Angel Investing Isn’t What It Used to Be The value of angel deals in the U.S. fell 64% from 2015 to $400 million last year. Angel investing, typically involving individuals making personal investments into nascent startups, has made for some of the most legendary startup bets in history—think Peter Thiel’s $500,000 check into the company then known as The Facebook in 2004. But angel investing isn’t what it used to be. https://lnkd.in/ghSFB8Hz
