As a nurse I’d like to bring awareness to a worldwide concern that affects many American Women. Below is information from a general online search. Please share for awareness.
Unintended pregnancies
According to the HHS Office of Population Affairs, almost half (49%) of all pregnancies in the US are unintended. The Guttmacher Institute says that unintended pregnancy rates are highest among low-income women, women of color, cohabiting women, and women aged 18–24.
Abortions
In 2019, the CDC reported 629,898 abortions from 49 reporting areas, with an abortion rate of 11.4 per 1,000 women aged 15–44 and an abortion ratio of 195 per 1,000 live births. In 2021, the CDC reported that 53% of abortions were performed by early medication abortion at ≤9 weeks' gestation, followed by surgical abortion at ≤13 weeks' gestation (37.6%).
Unsafe abortions
According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), an estimated 45% of all abortions are unsafe, which can cause 5–13% of all maternal deaths. Unsafe abortions can also lead to long-term health complications for survivors.
Maternal deaths
In 2020, six women died from complications from legal induced abortion. Other factors that can influence maternal mortality rates in the US include COVID-19, the opioid crisis, and people having children at older ages.
Did you know that worldwide, 164 million women lack access to safe and effective contraception when they need it? Sexual and reproductive health services are essential healthcare for everyone.
