As a current board member of Kids Cooking For Life, I am reaching out to friends, colleagues and family alike to invite you to personally join me on Dec 4th, or support this mission to spread cooking classes for children. My parents divorced when I was 6, and while my dad taught me how to make rice in a rice cooker, I really wished someone could have taught me how to cook. It wasn't until I became an adult, did I learn how to cook. My career has evolved to be an instructor for kids' cooking classes and mentoring other instructors to teach cooking classes in the San Francisco Bay Area. As an instructor in communities like the Tenderloin, Bayview and Mission neighborhoods, I see first-hand what your donations can provide: purchasing healthy ingredients, cooking instruments and the 10 weeks I spend guiding them as they develop new lifelong skills. Will you help me continue to help communities heal from within by supporting Kids Cooking for Life and donating or coming to our Friendraiser? Your donations help fund cooking classes to those who need it the most. From KCL: "Hello, Friends, You are warmly invited to Kids Cooking For Life Friendraiser on December 4 at 5:30 - 7:30p (319 Miller Ave, Mill Valley CA)! I also want to share with you what’s cookin' at Kids Cooking For Life. Did you know that the California Department of Education does not require teachers to teach nutrition and when they do, it’s a barely a couple of hours through some hand outs and worksheets? We all know that is not the best way to learn about healthy eating. With schools already stretched thin and budgets for life skills programs continually shrinking, schools, administrators, teachers, parents, kids and our community RELY on organizations like Kids Cooking for Life to deliver this life-skill education. No wonder we have a long waitlist for our program. Thanks to donors like you, our classes are FREE to the children. Because no child should pay to learn life skills. The ability to cook simple, nutritious meals can reduce dependence on processed foods and give kids the confidence to prepare simple meals that nourish both body and mind. Eating healthy shouldn’t be so difficult! By offering our classes free of charge to schools that cannot afford them, we ensure that children from all backgrounds have the opportunity to learn these skills. Your investment in the our young chefs ensures that they have the opportunity to benefit from a lifetime of healthy eating. Pls join our Friendraiser on December 4. If you unable to attend but would like to support us, please consider making a donation on https://lnkd.in/gNBipXyk or through Venmo (QR code in invitation below). Together, we can continue to empower young people, one healthy meal at a time."

📣 Life Update (getting personal and vulnerable)…I started a kids cooking school on the side and am now going all in!! Junior Chefs Kitchen provides hands-on cooking classes infused with nutrition education for ages 2-18. Some of you know that I opened the JCK brick-and-mortar Studio in Lincoln Park, Chicago November 2023 while still working full time in tech sales (and trying to be a present mother to my 3 young kids). As of last week, I have decided to go for it and work full time at JCK!!! This is a nerve racking decision but the right one for me, my family and JCK. The demand has exceeded expectations and there are big growth plans so I want to be "all in" (a la Scott Galloway or the sharks on #sharktank). Here’s why you should check us out - in person, on social or subscribe to our weekly newsletter: 💙 We give parents a break from battling with their kids to try new foods!! 💜 Our Junior Chefs learn life skills - like knife safety, cooperation, patience, teamwork, collaboration, math, and science. ❤️ We are the only kids cooking school in Chicagoland that cooks with meat, fish and poultry as young as 2 years old. 🧡 JCK works with a Registered Dietitian that ensures our recipes are nutrient dense and provides the curriculum for staff to share these factoids. Firefighters healthy snack program helps fill tummies in Delta School program continues to grow Ian Jacques - Delta Optimist Jun 13, 2024 https://lnkd.in/gKdsr8ji Delta firefighters continue to fill hungry tummies of children in need here in Delta. On Thursday (June 6), the Optimist was invited by the Delta Firefighters’ Charitable Society to fire hall number three in North Delta for the final healthy snack food prep and drop-off day for the school year. Firefighters, volunteering their time off shift, were busy packing up boxes of granola bars, fresh fruit and veggies, peperoni sticks, boxes of crackers, juice boxes – even bread for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches – all to be delivered that day to 30 elementary schools across North and South Delta. The firefighters picked up all the groceries, which were organized and ready for pick-up that morning at Costco. Firefighter Warren Balzer said the healthy snack program and the need for the program continues to grow. “The last few years we have been able to add in a lot more – like fresh produce, yogurt and cheese,” he said. “Mr. Noodles is also very popular for a lunch-type item. The school district has recently just purchased fridges and freezers for all the schools, so that is a real positive thing for us.” Last month, the Charitable Society, alongside several corporate sponsors and the City of Delta, hosted its fundraising Mayor’s Charitable Ball at the Cascades Delta Casino raising more than $600,000. “That funding will go right back to this program. We have now secured some funding for this program for the next couple of years, which is great. Our aim is to achieve self-sustainability,” he said. “Now we do not have to focus on where money from next year is going to come. We can focus on making this program better, how we can continue to deliver it to the schools. “One of the benefits of that whole event was to raise awareness of food insecurity in Delta. I don’t think as many people know of the level of food insecurity in Delta, so that event was really a good eye-opener for a lot of people. A lot of us have kids and when we go into our own schools, we see kids show up without, so being able to give back and knowing that kids can actually go to school and not have to worry about food, really resonates with all of us. We take a lot of pride in being able to help.” To learn more about the program or any of the other charitable initiatives of the Delta Firefighters see: https://lnkd.in/gCFT9JWk. 🌱 Food education is essential for our future 🌱 I'm incredibly proud of the work we've done at Chefs in Schools. Bringing passionate chefs into school kitchens doesn't just transform the meals; it sparks curiosity and improves the overall well-being of students. With Riverford Organic Farmers support, we’re expanding this impact to the Southwest, aiming to educate 40,000 more children about healthy, fresh food. This isn't just about better school lunches; it’s about food as education, as empowerment, as change. 🚀

Curriculum refresh? (Try learn Math on an empty stomach):
Good news for big wholesalers, bad news for students relying on warm, nutritious school lunches. Yesterday Hon David Seymour announced the government is inviting big food manufacturers, producers, wholesalers and distributors to register their interest in providing school lunch services. This is the next step in the coalition government’s plans to cut the quality of school lunches in its new school lunch programme. Although Seymour noted his excitement for the commercial opportunities the new programme will represent for 'the market', he didn’t say much about what it means for the wellbeing of tamariki. As the Health Coalition Aotearoa has recently stated: ‘It is unclear what food will replace these meals for intermediate and high schools, but at $3 per student and based on a charity-run model, we believe it will likely be mainly processed, packaged foods with far less nutritional value.’ (https://lnkd.in/gYqrWrZe) CPAG is highly critical of the government lowering the quality of food served in schools. We know this is the main meal for some students. It needs to be healthy and nutritious. CPAG is also critical that the coalition government is seemingly ignoring research that found the existing school lunch programme was performing well, and in some cases, exceeding expectations against a range of criteria. This included alleviating hunger, providing healthy food, improving school attendance, and improving long-term educational outcomes. Importantly, it was also shown to have a positive impact on the mental health of students. (https://lnkd.in/ghwtUXrc) On the one hand David Seymour states he wants to improve school attendance, and on the other he is weakening a programme that has been shown to help.

https://lnkd.in/gk5JKzdz This sounds like a great return on the investment! Healthier, happier and more alert students can also learn good food habits and we can undo the damage of decades of ultra-processed food wreaking havoc on kids in the United States. "Egg white breakfast wraps, vegetarian ramen, gumbo, glazed carrots and organic cheeseburgers aren’t just trendy restaurant offerings — they’re on some of the breakfast and lunch menus at California schools. "With an influx of state and federal funding aimed at expanding access to school meals, California districts are ramping up food production, upgrading menus and using more fresh, healthy ingredients than before. School meals will continue to be free for all California students, as they have been since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic."
Healthier options on the menu as California begins providing free meals for all students
