Film Generation: From Text to Video. The technology, the creative process and workforce impact. Disrupting the movie industry. “It was evident back then that many filmmakers were just starting to think about how AI might fit into their creative process — whether they were using still images generated with AI or using Runway’s software for editing. Many of the films that year were self-consciously digital. My favorite, Sam Lawton’s “Expanded Childhood,” used AI image-generation software to extend childhood photos with weird, melty faced characters and sometimes-odd, sometimes-normal-seeming backgrounds. Now, the films look different, as does the industry. Runway is one of several companies offering text-to-video software.” #ai #movie

AI in Film is undeniably"cool", sure! But I'm much more interested in the phenomenology of it. What does introducing AI do to the experience of creating a film. Creativity makes the world go round, and AI is just another fuel source. Would love to hear your thought on my new article in our series "The Modern Filmmaker"!
Fellow Modern Filmmakers, We are excited to launch the next article in our series "The Modern Filmmaker". This one’s special to us because we’re getting real: anyone producing a movie is assessing risk, and anyone talking AI in this industry is flirting with it, too. Risk-taking is in the blood of the modern filmmaker! Here’s our take on how AI shines a spotlight on the inherent value of RISK. Check it out via the link below!

𝗔𝗜 𝗶𝗻 𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗺: 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱! I love watching movies; they transport me to incredible, wild, imaginative places and always bring a sense of joy. (except for horror films!) Recently, I’ve been thinking about AI and its role in film generation, especially after seeing Coca-Cola’s new AI-generated Christmas ad. This thought deepened when I came across a video of Prem Akkaraju, CEO of Stability AI, which recently welcomed acclaimed director James Cameron to its board. He made a bold prediction: “𝘞𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘹𝘵 5 𝘵𝘰 10 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘴, 𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘧𝘪𝘭𝘮, 𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘶𝘢𝘭 𝘮𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘢 𝘸𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘣𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘣𝘦 𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘣𝘺 𝘈𝘐.” For example, in 𝘈𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘢𝘳, some shots took 6,000 to 7,000 hours of computing to render a single frame; a process that 𝗔𝗜 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗲𝘀. This contrasts with something I wrote about last week when Ben Affleck shared his perspective on AI in the movie industry: “Affleck believes that while AI can handle repetitive and laborious tasks, it won’t replace human creativity in movies.” Both perspectives are fascinating. Personally, I’ve explored tools like 𝗞𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗥𝘂𝗻𝘄𝗮𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝘂𝗺𝗮, and while I’m not a filmmaker or videographer, these tools are placing incredible creative power directly into the hands of consumers. 𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: •. Will this democratization of filmmaking enhance human creativity or homogenize it? •. How will this shift affect the artistry and craftsmanship of traditional filmmaking? Are you optimistic about AI’s role in visual storytelling, or do you see challenges ahead? Let’s discuss; I’d love to hear your thoughts! #AI #FilmIndustry #StabilityAI #ArtificialIntelligence #Creativity #Technology #Innovation #Filmmaking #AIInMedia #VisualStorytelling

So… I tried to break Runway Act-One ☝️🤖 Act-One is a new feature that lets you generate expressive character performances using a single driving video and a character image. It’s fantastic for lip-sync and it allows you to act out your own characters, which is great. But the most important part of filmmaking are those subtle gestures that truly convey emotion, like a little head tilt, a brief eyebrow raise, or a quick angry smirk 🎭 I wanted to see how well Act-One could handle these micro-expressions. I’m not an actor, so I pulled some of the best acting performances - the most emotional performances in cinema, and tested how they translated to my characters 🎬 I was impressed by how accurately it captured these little expressions, regardless of the style or character. For example, Will Smith’s nose wrinkles and subtle eyebrow furrows, or that subtle lip quiver and quick side glance from Liam Neeson mapped perfectly. It was surprising how much of the original emotion came through 🔥 It’s also a fun experiment to grab serious scenes and map them onto goofy animal characters :) #Runway #AI #AIFilmmaking

🎬 My First AI Short Film: Diving Into the Technical Side with CapCut 🎬 This past Sunday, I stepped out of my comfort zone and entered my first AI short film competition! Although horror isn’t the type of film I usually watch or create, I took this as a perfect opportunity to try something new and challenge myself. One key area I focused on was using CapCut to create an eerie, gloomy atmosphere for the film. Since the storyline alternates between the main character’s dialogue and her memories of the past, I needed a clear transition to distinguish these moments visually. Here’s how I did it: 🔹 Sepia Filter: I used the sepia filter to give the flashbacks a nostalgic, yet unsettling vibe. This filter in CapCut adds a warm, brownish tone to the footage, instantly signaling that the scene is set in the past. It helped reinforce the idea of memories without using heavy visual effects. 🔹 Transitions: I used two different transitions to create a distinct shift between the present and the memories: Black Fade: After the main character finished talking in the present, I used a black fade transition to signify the end of the moment, giving the scene a somber, fading-out effect before moving into her memories. Blur: When transitioning out of her memories and back to the present, I used a blur transition to capture the sense of disorientation as the past fades and the story shifts back to reality. These techniques helped build the gloomy atmosphere I wanted for the film and subtly yet effectively distinguish between past and present. It was a fun learning experience working with CapCut’s tools and exploring new ways to tell a story visually. ✨ If you’d like to watch the film, here’s the link: https://lnkd.in/ge94zMJp ✨ What about you? Have you used CapCut for any creative projects? I’d love to hear what techniques or tricks you’ve learned! I look forward to working on more AI films and discovering new creative approaches with each project! #AI #AIShortFilm #CapCut #VideoEditing #Filmmaking #HorrorFilm #Creativity #Storytelling #TechnicalSide #CapCutTips #CuriousRefuge #AIFilmmaking

It is interesting to see how "text to image" is evolving to "text direction". This space is evolving super rapidly now and is a compelling example of #UI design. The text is the cue for camera and action direction. The characters are not fully modularized yet, but that is plainly coming. Exciting times as #AI matures as a *creative* tool for true direction. I would expect to see text driven scene animation in #Blender pretty soon if it is not already there. The key is so simple... training text to match intended action sequences. This will soon translate to many control problems. A fun problem is text-controlled maneuver. "Follow that car." "Do an outside loop." There are super well-capitalized firms focused on "God level general AGI". I think that is a commercial mistake. There are plenty of brains on Planet Earth. What you *need* to do is build architectures to marry experts into a system of systems that can be directed in simple human language. That is here already with #Runway #gen3, #KlingAI and others. Where traditional corporate will FAIL dismally in this new world is that it is completely impossible to have a corporate conversation involving truth. The truth does not compute in corporate. The truth does compute with an #AI trained on ground truth "how the world works" data. This is a *compelling* competitive advantage compared to the internal bullshit stream that constitutes a normal corporate conversation. https://lnkd.in/gAsyrRuD
