AIIDEVAfrica #AfricaSDGsMentorshipProgram Third Session Highlights Today’s session was an eye-opener! We had the privilege of diving deep into the world of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with Mr. Emmanuel Ola-Olowoyo, who shared his extensive knowledge and passion for sustainability. Here are some key takeaways: 🔍 Understanding SDGs: We explored the timeline of SDGs—from their commissioning in 2012 to the start of implementation in 2015, the declaration of 2020 as the Decade of Action, and the urgent call to action as we approach 2030. 📈 Evolution of Sustainable Development The concept of sustainable development has evolved significantly over the decades. It began as a focus on environmental conservation and has grown to encompass economic development and social inclusion. Today, sustainable development aims to balance these three pillars to ensure a prosperous future for all. 🤝 Our Responsibility With just 6 years left to achieve these goals, it’s more critical than ever for each of us to contribute to sustainability. We learned that SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) are pivotal in driving the success of all other SDGs. 🌍 Global Strategies We discussed and unlearned strategies from top-ranked countries in SDG implementation. Tunisia, ranking #1 in Africa for SDG progress, serves as an inspiring model. It’s clear that for Africa to thrive, we need to be on the same page and grow together. 🍃 Environmental Changes Participants shared observations about our changing environment. Notably, the decrease in butterfly populations, a small but significant indicator of our ecosystem's health. Imagine a world without these beautiful creatures, it would spell disaster for both humans and animals. This session has reinforced the importance of our collective effort in achieving the SDGs. Let’s keep pushing forward, learning from each other, and striving for a sustainable future! 🌿💪 #Sustainability #SDGs #AfricaUnite #FutureIsNow

🌍 Excited to share that I recently had the incredible opportunity to represent Ample & Co.(PVT.)Ltd. and Bio lanka at the Youth Consultation Summit in Sri Lanka, which was aligned with the Summit of the Future in New York. I was honored to address a dynamic audience of young leaders from various industries, focusing on crucial topics like climate change, sustainability, and ethical ventures. It was a privilege to discuss the pressing climate-related challenges facing the youth in Sri Lanka and explore actionable ideas for overcoming these obstacles. During the round table discussion, I highlighted the barriers that young people face in engaging with climate action and emphasized the support needed to overcome these challenges. We also explored the innovative initiatives that young Sri Lankans have taken to promote environmental stability and discussed how they can further contribute to developing and implementing policies for climate resilience. This summit was a remarkable platform to showcase Sri Lanka's commitment to sustainable and regenerative practices. Being part of this impactful dialogue reinforces my belief in the power of youth to drive meaningful change and build a greener future. A huge thank you to everyone involved for the opportunity to contribute to such an important cause. Here’s to continued collaboration and positive action towards a more sustainable planet! Spinning Tales for Change: How Global Stories Propel the SDGs In a world brimming with diversity, every culture and community has its unique tales. These stories, rich with heritage and personal journeys, hold the power not only to entertain but to enlighten and inspire action towards global goals. Why Stories Matter ? The narrative approach to solving problems isn't new, but its application in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is a dynamic and innovative strategy. Stories have the ability to humanize the abstract and often overwhelming issues outlined in the SDGs, making them more relatable and urgent. These are few examples from Around the Globe: 1- In Scandinavia, tales of sustainable living are shaping public policy and personal habits, aligning with SDG 13 (Climate Action). 2- Community storytellers in sub-Saharan Africa share successes in local healthcare, boosting efforts for SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being). 3- Urban narratives from Southeast Asia highlight the transformative power of responsible consumption, targeting SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). As professionals, policymakers, activists, or simply engaged global citizens, integrating storytelling into our strategies can amplify our impact. By sharing and highlighting stories that touch on these goals, we not only raise awareness but also inspire action. Do you have a story that illustrates progress towards an SDG? Share it in the comments ! And don't forget to register for our next summit dedicated to the global story: https://lnkd.in/ewwXByg2 #SDGs #Storytelling #ChangeMakers #Sustainability

Wow!! It was a phenomenal two days at the #Sustainability #Summit #2024. I am grateful to our speakers, presenters and moderators who shared deep insights from multiple perspectives including law, policy, agriculture, gender empowerment, governance, academia, entrepreneurship and business, emphasizing the urgent need to build local consensus and take proactive + enforceable actions to ensure a resilient future in Africa. Our team is distilling the Summit insights into a policy brief that will set out key recommendations. In the meantime, here are some key takeaways: 🎯 Since 1970, the number of birds and mammals have fallen by half. This was a sobering reminder of how dangerously close we are to the tipping point of catastrophe if collective and drastic action is not taken. 🎯 African societies must manage climate risk in a way that is nature-positive, focused on protecting our bio-diversity and unapologetic about promoting just outcomes for all, especially vulnerable communities that are ill-represented when climate -decisions are made. 🎯 It is not enough to have good laws, policies and strategies; we need an enabling environment, intentional advocacy and an empowered team/workforce. 🎯 African culture embeds care for nature and others; how do we leverage what we already know and communicate that effectively with our stakeholders and rights-holders? 🎯 Laws and policies must be inclusive and reflect the contextualized needs of Africans at all levels and represent a win-win-win for stakeholders, governments and business. 🎯 Innovative financing can unlock value and capital by leveraging Africa's vast assets and by empowering startups and private sector actors to innovate in the green economy. 🎯 We must empower the rural/ farming communities through off-grid renewable energy solutions, proactive local job creation and by promoting sustainable agriculture. 🎯We must approach climate change and resilience holistically, appreciating the intersecting issues and recognising all players in global supply chains. 🎯Businesses must effectively engage (not inform!) communities they affect and be held accountable when things go wrong. 🎯 Explore the potential for nuclear energy in climate adaption/energy transition strategies and how it may contribute to achieving the Paris Agreement's ambitious goals while enabling African countries to pursue their socio-economic development plans. 🎯 We must develop a pipeline of young Africans who are knowledgeable, confident and connected to local challenges, and guide them to lead and steward the development of continental-appropriate environmental, social and governance frameworks. Thank you our Sustainability Summit partners, the inspirational leadership of Ridwan Oloyede and Abraham Rutunda and the relentless work and passion from the amazing Certa Foundation and Certa Law teams. Enjoy the highlights captured 👇 and see you in 2025 for our next #sustainability conversation!

What do you call development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs and has ambitious objectives for a greener, healthier more peaceful, and equal planet? Well, that's Sustainable development, an ideal born at the 2012 Rio+20 Summit in Brazil by the United Nations and launched on 25th September 2015 by 193 member states. Amplifying the SDGs is not just a necessity but an urgent call to action by working together, raising awareness, fostering collaborations, mobilizing resources, promoting policy integration, and ensuring accountability to create a more prosperous equitable, and sustainable development AIIDEV AfricaEmmanuel Ola-Olowoyo #sustainabledevelopment #SDGs
