After arriving at our accommodation, the first stop on our Creative Green Adventure was a last-minute visit to a local dog shelter. We were invited by AIMM – Marine Environment Research Association’s cook, Bartosz, who volunteers there. Tiny Shelter Albufeira is a small dog shelter run by Isabel Searle and her team of volunteers. They’re currently caring for nearly 90 dogs, each with their own heartbreaking but hopeful stories. Isabel showed us around, introducing us to many of the dogs and sharing how they came to the shelter. Because of their limited space and resources (they don’t receive any support from local councils or the government), they can only respond to the most severe cases of abuse and neglect. It’s tough, but they’re doing such incredible work with what they have. During our visit, we donated some food, kindly provided by Beco, and we’re hoping to organise more regular support from brand sponsors. Spending time with the dogs was so emotional – most loved the company, but some were still too nervous around us because of their past. I just wish we could have stayed longer! For many, the cold season brings the joy of working from home or donning their most stylish and warmest beanie from their dresser. However, for others, the cold is a formidable adversary, a relentless struggle for survival against the unforgiving elements. As a community it is extremely important to protect yourself and others from the harsh elements that winter brings! It takes a village! How to help your community: ❄️If you have a printer at home- look up the closest warming shelter/ cold weather shelter in your area. Print out a few copies and pass them out to any individuals who may be seeking shelter for southern states who don’t typically get this type of weather. ❄️Donate! Donate! Donate! Animal shelters, DV shelters, any type of sanctuary will need donations at this time! Research a non-profit that’s close to you and your mission and donate your time, finances,and/or your unused items (think blankets, socks, layering pieces) If you are in need of help from your community: ☃️if you are in an urban area and have a phone and are unhoused and are in need of shelter call 3-1-1! ☃️ If there is a lack of resources in your city head to a library, neighborhood center, airport, hospital, or church and use a phone to call 3-1-1 for shelter support. Venus very soon began to enjoy her little beautification treatment. Venus was part of a cared for colony of community cats living in an inner city parking lot. She became sick when the weather turned cold in November. Metro Cat Rescue took Venus in and nursed her back to health. Metro Cat Rescue continues to care for beautiful Venus. * * * There are MANY more cats needing medical attention and care. Please help! URGENT - On Tuesday, May 14, 2024, Parachutes for Pets was activated as emergency support for those fleeing the Fort McMurray wildfires with pets. Although most evacuees were headed to the Edmonton area, nonprofits are struggling across Alberta and the pet resources are extremely limited. Within 24 hours Parachutes for Pets had sent multiple loads of pet supplies, and emergency pet packs to Fort Saskatchewan, Edmonton, and Lac La Biche. They had also arranged for over 40 pets in the Edmonton area to have safekeeping and six to receive vet care for wildfire related medical concerns.  Their team has also seen 8 pets arrive to Calgary with their families. They currently have 4 of them in their safekeeping program, and the rest have popped into Parachutes to get the essential supplies they had to leave behind. At a time when their regular need for services has increased, and the prediction of a long, dry summer ahead - they need to humbly ask for support to ensure our efforts can continue.  Can you help? Can you imagine having to choose between a home and your beloved pet? This is the heartbreaking reality for many Canadians. Over 60% of households in Canada have cats or dogs, and more than 70% see them as family members. Sadly, the shortage of pet-friendly housing in our country is a major problem, making many families choose between a home and keeping their companion animals. Many shelters are at capacity, dealing with an influx of surrenders from families facing this reality. From August to September 10, our goal is to raise $10,000 through our Tails of Summer Challenge.
