Horses: Solving and Preventing Problems If your horse riding experience is not enjoyable for both you and your horse, then there is a problem. Identifying the problem can be challenging. Solving the problem can be challenging. By the time we recognize that there is a problem, there may be several underlying factors contributing to the signs that we pick up. Kissing spines is problematic if it is clinically relevant to the problem. It is also essential to know if it is the primary issue or if there are secondary considerations. As part of our Vision and Mission to raise awareness, educate and advocate for horse welfare based on the evidence and research we can find, and create a set of philosophies and protocols for horse and rider welfare and performance, we invite you to join our webinar next Thursday. Horse Welfare - Time To Self Regulate and Have Difficult Conversations Whether people in the horse industry want to accept it or not, the world of equestrianism is in crisis. As the headlines in mainstream media continue to draw attention to the welfare issues, flaunted in plain sight, at the "top" of the sport, there seems to be a continuing trend of "business as usual" and "Let's just keep our heads in the sand" and hope it will go away. Historically, when there is an awakening around animal welfare issues, such as the case of circus or zoos, if the efforts to change are not taken on by the offenders themselves, it will be taken our of their hands. When it comes to horses, who have been historically used by people for many reasons, it is time to delve deep and learn about their nature and needs and undertake the overhaul needed by the ENTIRE horse world in order to prioritize their welfare. Welfare is not what we believe to be "caring" for them from the human perspective, which is clearly failing spectacularly, but by meeting THEIR standards of welfare from their perspective. Learn more about what this means and how we can have a better starting point in conversations about horse welfare. Horses: The Impact of Pulling Your Horse into a Frame Although this is what we see in so much of the riding today, it is not what we should be focusing on when it comes to developing our horses for the tasks we ask of them. What do you know about your horse's muscles? What are the main muscles involved in topline development? Can you recognize overdevelopment of the wrong muscles? What is the impact on horse welfare, soundness and behavior? These are the questions we must all be asking and able to answer if we are to be truly skilled horse people. If our horses are compromised physically, mentally or emotionally, is it something to be proud of? Join the Evolution towards evidence and research based whole horse/whole rider knowledge that preserves the well being of both horse and rider on the journey to compassionate and skilled horsemanship. Horse Welfare - Ushering in a New Era of Awareness and Education Bringing unity and clarity of vision to a horse world that is so divided and varied is challenging. Seeing things from the horse's perspective has to be the way forward, and the evidence and research can help us find our way to better protocols prioritizing horse welfare. The Five Domains of Horse welfare provide us with some clarity in defining what welfare looks like from the horse's perspective. Our September webinar focused on this topic - better defining horse welfare from the horse's perspective. When it comes to the welfare of the ridden horse, there is much to consider. How do they communicate when the saddle pinches, their feet hurt, the rider is sitting crookedly, the bridle doesn't fit, the teeth are causing issues, the rider is giving conflicting cues etc.? Dr. Sue Dyson's decades of research into horse welfare in the ridden horse has culminated in the Ridden Horse Pain Ethogram, a tool to guide the future of equestrianism. Today is the last day of the 70% discount on this groundbreaking course, 24 Behaviors Indicating Pain in the Ridden Horse, and we urge every horse person out there to have it as an essential part of their resources.
