:: Climate change is the Everest of all problems in cities - Embracing sponge cities can solve :: Sponge cities are urban areas designed with permeable surfaces and green infrastructure to absorb and store rainwater, reducing the risk of flooding. By increasing the presence of parks, trees, and natural drainage systems, cities can enhance their "absorbency" and resilience to floods. The key principles of a sponge city are: - Protect and restore the original urban ecosystem, including rivers, lakes, and vegetation, to enhance the city's natural water absorption and purification capacity. - Incorporate green infrastructure like parks, permeable pavements, rain gardens, and green roofs. This nature-based approach aims to reduce urban flooding, water shortages, and heat island effects by working with the natural water cycle instead of against it. Sponge cities work in harmony with nature to quickly soak up heavy rainfall, rather than solely relying on traditional grey infrastructure like pipes and pumps. Ground surfaces that mimic sponges can absorb rainwater, which is then naturally filtered by the soil and can recharge urban aquifers. Many cities are already embracing the concept of sponge cities. Implementing sponge city concepts remains a pivotal solution, requiring broader adoption and targeted interventions. #climatechange #sponge #extremeweather #floods #resilience #sustainability #esg

Watch this video on threads. Gross apathy. Yes, gross apathy from both the general public and the government. WHEN ARE WE GOING TO BUILD "EXCLUSIVE" STORM- WATER or RAIN-WATER DRAINS ON ROAD SIDES WITHOUT LINKING GREYWATER & OTHER WASTE WATER FROM HOUSE AND FIRMS? I can show you hundreds of houses in upcoming areas like Vadavalli et al where house-owners have built soak pits OUTSIDE their houses and civic authorities have thrown a Nelson's eye on these illegal intrusions. https://lnkd.in/gdGD3erp

******** Arkavathi River after the rains ******* This photo was taken upstream of TG Halli on October 25th, 2024. Paani was on the field to observe the condition of our rivers after the heavy downpour. Looking at the fishing nets, I can’t help but worry about what the catch from this river will contain—likely a mix of toxic pollutants from the Peenya Industrial area and much more in the catchment. What worries me even more is that the Water Treatment Plant (WTP) at TG Halli has been readied to augment the Cauvery water supply to Bangalore, but I’m not sure it can handle this toxic concoction. At the same time, I cannot stop dreaming of a day when the Arkavathi is devoid of these pollutants—supporting all life forms, including us Bengalureans, and reducing our reliance on the Cauvery River. It’s time to act, to clean our rivers, and to protect our water bodies for generations to come. #SaveRivers #Arkavathi #Pollution #PeenyaIndustrialPollution #TG_Halli #WaterConservation #Sustainability #PaaniEarth

Wetlands, waterbodies are lifeline for cities and people but unfortunately are abused with discharge of sewage, industrial effluent, encroached upon for construction etc. We need to change this situation for our own sake, to sustain ourselves else the impacts of climate change. Sharing this article by Badri Chatterjee in The Hindustan Times wherein he nicely builds the narrative on loss of waterbodies in Delhi, elaborating with facts and developing the story substantiating with conversation with experts and people involved in the subject. I found it interesting and useful read and also getting a chance to come across experts with whom I have a long association while working and learning insights on the work. All of us got a chance to share our perspectives. What we see in this article with Delhi at the center, has relevance for all urban areas and more so in larger cities. The sense of urgency need not be overemphasised. There is need to integrate water management at city level, develop basin connected cities and integrate planning and management of water, river basins at different levels- Cities, Districts and Sub-Basins, Basins. #URMP Urban River Management Plan helps develop a common vision for city and waters- River here is inclusive of its ecosystem and waterbodies are important component. District Plans bring an approach to bring harmony between hydraulic and geographical- administrative boundaries. And ultimately these need to fall systematically in basin plans. #waterbodies #wetlands #urbanrivers Badri Chatterjee National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) SAIARD - RSIGST and CRA Namami Gange
