COFFEE futures in New York climbed to the highest since 1997 on worries about crops in top growers, threatening to further raise costs for roasters and consumers. Arabica, the high-end variety favoured for specialty brews, rose as much as 3 per cent on Monday (Nov 25). Coffee prices have soared this year due to major supply disruptions in key producers from Brazil to Vietnam, with the more budget-friendly robusta type that’s used in instant drinks recently hitting the highest since the 1970s. Concerns have mounted that supplies from Brazil will slow after a long drought that hurt coffee trees, which may reduce next season’s output. The potential for next years’ harvest “has certainly been impacted by the long dry and hot period that affected arabica coffee crops until September,” Rabobank analyst Guilherme Morya wrote in a report. COLUMN: The olive oil crisis is over. Extra virgin olive oil wholesale prices have already fallen ~55% from their February record high; retail prices will soon follow. But, and this is a rather large but, all problems aren't solved. The olive harvest is underway in the Andalusia region of Spain, which accounts for about one-third of global production. Typically, harvesting volumes peak there just before Christmas, and by now we have a very good idea of both quantity and quality. Thanks to a better crop, Andalusia is likely to produce about 1 million metric tons of olive oil in the 2024-2025 season, up 77% from the previous year. Add other areas of Spain, plus good crops too in Greece, Portugal, Tunisia and, above all, Turkey, and global output is expected to recover to about 3.4 million tons, up from less than 2.6 million tons in 2023-2024. Among major producers, only Italy is yet to recover as a pathogen is killing the country’s olive trees. The cost of top-quality Spanish extra virgin olive oil in the wholesale market has fallen to about $4,250 per ton, down by more than half from an all-time high of more than $10,000 per ton set in February. On the supermarket shelves, a liter of olive oil could soon drop from more than €10 per liter to about €5 per liter. Bloomberg Opinion #aceitedeolive #oliveoil #Spain

#Robusta hits 45-year high, instant #coffee costs may soar in #Vietnam Robusta coffee prices have reached a 45-year peak, as reported by the International Coffee Organization, with a significant 17% increase in April, marking the highest prices since 1979. This surge is primarily due to a #supply shortage following poor #harvests in Vietnam, the top producer of robusta #beans. The situation is aggravated by #drought and #heat in Vietnam's coffee regions, posing risks to the 2024 #crop. However, there's hope for recovery from the drought this month, and an influx of #arabica beans in the market could help in stabilizing the robusta coffee #prices. https://lnkd.in/dTmMJnbn #cafe #precios
