This is the problem with frontend development. They consider React a "skill." React is a library that can be used to build a framework. In 5 years, there will be a shiny new one and people will be saying "you still use React?" For reference, see "Angular" and "jQuery." JavaScript is a skill. Most Frontend developers reach for it instinctively, not realizing that in most cases that thing they're trying to do could be done with HTML and CSS simply and with better performance. An example: a young coworker developed a feature where users would interact with elements behind a transparent overlay. Usability and accessibility concerns aside, he shows off a hundred or so lines of JavaScript where they attach event handlers to the transparent overlay which would take the offset location of the interaction, determine the underlying element at the same offset, create new events, and dispatch them to the underlying element. they were very proud of this solution, as they had spent an entire sprint working out all the details. After they finished, I pointed out that a simpler and more accurate result could be achieved by simply adding "user-events: none;" to the CSS for the overlay. JavaScript is a must-have skill for a frontend developer. An important differentiator of a skilled frontend developer is knowing when NOT to use it.
