What will the future of logistics bring? One way to anticipate the future is to compare the progress of the present against the past. The picture below shows the historic port of Buenos Aires, Puerto Madero. In it, I've sketched the outline of the corvette ship Uruguay from 1874 (red, approx 50x8 meters) against a modern, very large ocean vessel from 2021 (green, 399x65 meters). The bigger ship covers ~64 times the area of the smaller one and highlights why Puerto Madero is the historic port of Buenos Aires: its basins are simply far too small for modern vessels. Does this mean that we will have kilometer-long vessels in a few years? Hard to tell, but I hope for magnitude-like improvements in other areas like fuel consumption or packaging efficiency. And that our software solutions can contribute to that goal...
