A long but helpful read. I think the labels, the discussion and perspective they offer, can be helpful for families with AuADHD people. Well it is for me anyway!

Neurotypes are lifelong aspects of identity that shape how individuals perceive, think, and interact with the world. However, neurodiversity efforts often focus primarily on autism and ADHD; leaving out so many other neurotypes. True inclusion and neurodiversity affirmation means embracing the full spectrum of neurotypes, not just a popular few. #Neurodiversity #Neurodivergence #Neurodivergent #NeurodiversityAffirming #Neurotype #Diversity #NeurodiversityUmbrella #MentalHealthMatters #Autism #ADHD

Gastrointestinal problems are such a common co-morbid issue for many Autistic people. A diagnosis of IBS was given to me in my teens, for symptoms which became a living nightmare, taking me very close to a serious eating disorder and suicide during my twenties. It was so bad I used to wish to have a colostomy bag! Sadly my late brother would undergo such a procedure in 2014. I finally received life changing medication in 2007, at age 32, but waited another 13 years before the connection between this and my being Autistic was made after my Autism diagnosis at age 45. It was hearing another Autistic person share their lived experience of challenging gastrointestinal problems for me to make the connection between the two, then finding the stats and research. Gastrointestinal suffering is another (rarely considered) route to exploring whether a person is Autistic. There are so many doors into finding us, yet we only seem to use the doors of mental illness suffering. #latediagnosis #autism #gastricproblems #IBS #gastrointestinal #anorexia #ARFID #eatingdisorders #suicideprevention

"Statistics suggest that roughly 46–84% of autistic children experience digestive issues and that autistic adults are 7 times more likely to report experiencing GI issues to a doctor." --- This checks out with my experience, personally and professionally. 😅 There are other common idiopathic ailments I hear from my patients: - Migraines - Psychogenic seizures - Urticaria/other rashes - Hypoglycemia - And then the GI, nausea and unexplained vomiting The connections between being Autistic and EDS, POTS, and IBS are better studied than my above observations. The patterns of idiopathic ailments and autoimmune conditions that have emerged over the last year of practicing in this niche...it has been very interesting. https://buff.ly/4aN11Dt #Autistic #Autism #Autist #AuDHD #AdultAutism #AdultAutistic #adultDx #AutismAwareness #ADHD #AdultADHD #LateDiagnosed #Neurodiversity #Neurodivergent #Neurodivergence

👉Individuals have started to learn more about developmental disabilities, such as autism and ADHD, through social media. Some have self-identified as having a developmental disability, though they have not received a clinical diagnosis. 👉What are some of the positive aspects of this and what are some of the pitfalls? Are these even the right questions to be asking? 👉These issues are unfolding in real time and hold significant meaning and implications for clinicians and individuals. What do you think? 👉I appreciate nuance and complexity. I believe many seemingly conflicting truths can coexist. I don’t think there is one right answer. Please be respectful in your responses knowing that we don’t know each other’s personal stories and we are all doing our best to be humans in a messy world ❤️ . . . . . . #autism #audhd #autismspectrum #audhder #autisticidentity #autismawareness #autismacceptance #neurodivergent #neurodiversity #neurodiversityaffirming #ndaffirming #autismfamily #pediatric #pediatrician #psychologist #medicalmodel #therapy #therapist #childtherapist #neurodivergent #adhder #askanautistic #therapygoals #twiceexceptional #2ekids #2e #adhd #adhdkids #adhdassessment #selfidentification #selfidentity
