I’ve often spoken about the pressing issue of nursing shortages worldwide, and these World Health Organization figures reiterate this, estimating a shortage of 4.5 million nurses by 2030. WHO’s Global Strategic Directions for Nursing and Midwifery provides a roadmap emphasizing four key policy areas to remedy this challenge: education, jobs, leadership, and service delivery. The Phillips Ives Review into the digital readiness of nurses and midwives was due to be published in 2023. The review has explored what skills and training the workforce might require when working with new technologies in the coming years. Despite the rapid advancement of digital technologies in healthcare, and the growing demand on nurses to become more digitally competent, the review has still not materialised.
