I love this article presenting yet another salient reason to promote more women to leadership roles, both in business and government: it's better for the environment! Why? - you may ask. Here are just a few of the reasons listed: Women care, they are altruistic, and they take the long view. I am lucky to work - and have worked over the years - with so many amazing women. There are countless women working on climate to be inspired by. But women continue to be under represented on boards, which is detrimental for climate action. As María Mendiluce writes in Forbes ‘Imagine what we’d achieve in a world where more women ruled.’ Happy International Women’s Day to all. 🙌 On International Women’s Day we celebrate the social, political, economic and cultural achievements of women worldwide. We Mean Business Coalition benefits from the expertise, experience and insight of many incredible women on our board, through our network of partners, in the companies we work with and on our staff – 67% of whom are women – including our CEO, María Mendiluce, who has today been recognized as one of Reuters' 20 trailblazing women (🔗 https://lnkd.in/etcP-fKr). Women’s leadership and inclusion is vital to increasing international and planetary stability. Think of the inspirational women leading the charge on the global stage - such as Christiana Figueres, one of the architects of the Paris Agreement, or Mia Amor Mottley, the Prime Minister of Barbados and brains behind the Bridgetown Initiative. Gender diversity is crucial to successful negotiations, bringing with it better, bolder decisions that have been shown to last. This is why we recently organised a letter to the #COP29 presidency signed by 100 women leaders from across business, civil society and science calling on them to reconsider their original decision to include no women on the organizing committee for this year’s summit in Baku. Meanwhile, inside every company, there are women showing how change can happen and helping their younger colleagues to take the space and move forward the transition towards a cleaner, fairer world. Yet, they face challenges in being heard – as María Mendiluce highlights in Forbes - to the detriment of climate action, and us all (🔗 https://lnkd.in/erfPDTT3). So together, let’s continue to champion gender equality and empower women to shape a sustainable future for all. 🆕 If emissions are to be brought down in line with climate science, women everywhere must stand up, speak out and act to slash emissions and lead the change to a more sustainable and a more equitable world. On International Women’s Day, We Mean Business Coalition is highlighting some of the women leading the charge in climate policy and businesses large and small, on our latest blog: https://lnkd.in/esSHyNxu Yet we cannot deny that women face challenges in being heard everywhere. As of January this year, just 26 heads of state and government were female. Only one in five delegations to last year’s COP climate summit were women, and Azerbaijan only added women to the organizing committee for this year’s summit after a backlash. While the rise of the female CSO has been documented, women remain under-represented on boards and in senior leadership positions. This gender imbalance is detrimental to climate action, as I outline in my latest article in Forbes here: https://lnkd.in/ePCX7SCP It may not be easy and there’s a long way to go, but women’s leadership and inclusion is vital to increasing international and planetary stability. 📢 So today I ask my network to celebrate and support the women who are blazing a trail in business, policy and beyond by tagging them. I will start by tagging my friends, colleagues and collaborators Helen Clarkson, Dr Celine Herweijer, Mindy Lubber, Sherry Madera, Halla Tomasdottir, Patricia Espinosa Cantellano, Supriya Sen, Laurence Tubiana, Catherine McKenna, Rachel Kyte, Sandrine Dixson-Declève, Kate Brandt, Kara Hartnett Hurst, Jessica Anderen, Kerry Constabile, Sarah Bloom Raskin, Melanie Nakagawa and Ester Baiget. #IWD2024 #ClimateAction #GenderEquality

#DYK: Women are 2.5 times more likely to get involved in climate issues and 60% more likely to advocate for social good? "When more women lead, in particular women of color and from the geo-political south, we unlock diverse perspectives and innovative solutions to address our most pressing challenges. By strengthening women's leadership in climate worldwide, we build our collective resilience and pave the way for a sustainable future that benefits us all." - Helen M., President and CEO, ClimateWorks Foundation #WomenLeadingOnClimate is rallying the voices of women leaders and driving #ClimateAction at #COP29. At COP28, 11% of represented world leaders were women, and women only made up 38% of delegates. At Climate Group, we drive climate action, fast. But we know progress can’t be fully realised without the equal inclusion of women in all geographies and at all levels of decision making. This #InternationalWomensDay we’re #inspiringinclusion, highlighting how understanding and valuing women’s inclusion is essential to a sustainable future. Today, the fight for net zero and a just transition must be non-negotiables when forging a better future for all. We spoke with some of the women from across our global offices and network, to reflect on how they’re making inclusive progress in the climate space and what inspiring inclusion means to them. ♀️ Women’s equal participation and leadership in political and public life are essential to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. However... ❌ Just 19 countries have a woman Head of State, and 17 countries have a woman Head of Government. ❌ At the current rate, gender equality in the highest positions of power will not be reached for another 130 years. Balanced political participation and power-sharing between women and men in decision-making not only is in our hands.... its an internationally agreed target set in the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.
Can you spot the women at #COP29? ➔ Only 6 out of 78 government leaders mentioned the impact of climate change on women and girls. ➔ 4 of the 6 were women. Yet, women play key roles in advancing #ClimateAction. ✊♀️ We need women's equal representation at the decision-making table. 📷 Photo: UN Climate Change - Kiara Worth

Why Aren't Women at the Discussion Table? As climate change picks up speed, it’s women who are feeling the weight of it the most. Yet at #COP29, only 6 out of 78 leaders even talked about how climate change impacts women. If the people bearing the brunt of the crisis aren’t in the room, how are we supposed to get real answers? In sociology, we talk about “invisible labor” - that work that goes unseen but keeps everything running. Women do this all the time, as farmers, workers, and caregivers, managing resources and passing down knowledge that’s crucial to keeping communities strong. It’s that generational knowledge about ecosystems and conservation that acts as a barrier against the intergenerational effects of climate change. But when it comes to shaping policy, we’re left out. And here’s the thing: that’s not just unfair, it’s risky. When women are shut out, we miss out on the very knowledge that could build resilience for the long haul. And without women’s voices, we’re losing out on a lot of substance to build policies for real change. So, what needs to change? We need policies that actively bring women to the table. From local councils to international summits, our perspectives are ESSENTIAL. This isn’t just about fairness this time but it’s about making sure our communities are ready for whatever comes NEXT. #unwomen #policyadvocacy #COP29

Unequal outcomes result from unequal treatment and unequal power in decision making. In every aspect of a #woman s life, she is penalized for being a woman 💜SAFETY Every 10 minutes a woman is murdered by a man she knows around the world. 1 in 3 women face male violence and abuse in their life 🩵HEALTH a woman experiences higher levels of ill health in her life, yet in 2020, only 1% of healthcare research was invested in female-specific conditions 💙WORK a woman earns 20% less than a man and is more likely to do unpaid work 💛JUSTICE a woman is more likely to be incarcerated or convicted for lower level offenses. The female prison population has grown about 53% since 2000, while the male population by 19%. Yet women represent <9% of all prisoners. 💚CLIMATE CHANGE disproportionately impacts women and girls pushing more of them into poverty, displacement, food insecurity. Women and children are 14 times more likely to die in extreme weather disasters than men. They are also more likely to experience gender-based violence during and after disasters. Yet they continue to be blocked from making decisions about their lives, at a time the current decision makers seem to be failing on their commitments to end gender based violence and climate disasters. Why??? 👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼 #domesticabuse #politics #poverty #prison #health #climatechange #COP29 #equity #noexcuse #16daysofaction
