The week before last, MacKenzie Scott announced that she was giving $640 million to small nonprofits that responded to an open call for applications.   ·      Over 6,000 nonprofits applied. ·      361 nonprofits were selected. ·      279 were each granted $2M, and 82 were each granted $1M. Two things impress me here: (1)   The size and scale of this giving is incredible. (2)   These grants were entirely unrestricted— to be used however the nonprofit sees fit. My sense is that MacKenzie Scott focuses less on thematic giving and more on identifying those nonprofits that are operating at a high level.  I also sense a humility in her approach to giving or rather an understanding that if you pick the right nonprofit, you have to trust that the nonprofit is the subject matter expert in the mission that it is pursuing.   I think of this as TRUST Philanthropy.  I’ve read a lot of people both praising and criticizing MacKenzie Scott for her philanthropy.  With the size of this grant cycle, we will have a case study on whether TRUST Philanthropy is successful. There has been a lot of buzz over the MacKenzie Scott and Yield Giving donations this week and rightly so. But all I can think about is HOW are those non-profits going to prepare themselves for that level of growth? ❓What systems and processes will enable them to deliver more impact? ❓How will they deliver on more sustainable and supportive commitments to their own people and teams? ❓How will they maintain momentum or solidify their new position, once the donation is used? Not every organization gets a transformative gift. But lots of small nonprofits and startups are tackling unanticipated growth. And, if you don't strengthen your foundation first, you only increase your risk to fall. Your people and teams are everything. Make sure they're resourced, clear, and thriving. And, while you're at it: Check out the recipients...there are some great local organizations on this list!

Although Hope Circuits is grounded in the post-secondary sector, my hope was that the conceptual tools and systems-level approach to re-wiring structures might resonate beyond universities and colleges and inspire people in different industries and contexts. Since the book launched itself into the world in May 2024, I have been heartened by the reception of the ideas beyond the academy. One of the sectors that has been an enthusiastic and early adopter is the charitable field - in advancement, fundraising, communications, donor engagement, cultivation cycles, private/public partnerships, community building, engagement, and professional development. While I knew I wanted to extend conversations beyond higher education (while staying true to my own context, knowledge, and purpose work), I did not attempt to foresee what form that might take: I had to trust that alignment would unfurl in ways I could not imagine. One example of this generative unfurling shows up in a recent newsletter from Kimberley MacKenzie, CPCC, ACC, thought leader in the charitable field, who cites Hope Circuits as a way to re-imagine giving and philanthropy. I recently came across a 'little book of evaluation tools', produced by University of Oxford. It's aimed at evaluating public engagement and research activities, but I think it's also a useful resource for charities and social enterprises interested in how they can creatively integrate evaluation into events or activities. What I like about it: ✔ it includes a short introduction to evaluation and why it's important ✔ it gives examples of different creative evaluation methods in practice ✔ the use of photos and colour make it visually appealing Link in comments. 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗿 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸? • Givzey’s autonomous fundraiser is a computer-generated avatar that looks like a real person and speaks to donors in plain language about the institution it represents.  • Donors have to opt in to communicating with the autonomous fundraiser, and they are clearly informed that it’s not a real person. • The A.I. fundraiser cannot currently have real-time conversations with donors. The College of Charleston did a small round of tests with the autonomous fundraiser over the summer and — like all 18 organizations testing the A.I. — will offer it to 1,000 donors this year.
