Seeing the lack of ambition in the final agreements at #COP16 on Biodiversity held in October and at the recent #COP29 on climate, or the failure of the 'Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution' 👇 , I can't agree more with Tom Rivett-Carnac's quote in the COP29 summary podcast of Outrage + Optimism: "It feels like countries were previously able to think long term and create multilateral solutions that would make the world better over decades. This week is the start of COP29 – the 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference. Between the 11th and 22nd of November, world leaders will meet in Baku, Azerbaijan. The conference will explore solutions to plastic pollution via the Climate Action Innovation Zone. This Sustainable Innovation Forum will showcase cutting-edge technologies and forward-thinking business models designed to reduce both plastic use and pollution. Additionally, the event will delve into the Global Plastic Pollution Agreement, exploring comprehensive solutions to address the climate impacts of plastic. Topics will include innovative financing mechanisms, transformative partnerships, and strategies to build global capacity for change. Over 190 nations and 23,000 attendees have gathered in Cali, Colombia, for the UN Convention on Biological Diversity's 16th meeting, where world leaders aim to take decisive action to protect biodiversity. High on the agenda is addressing plastic pollution, a key driver of biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation. These discussions will trickle into Baku’s COP29 and the fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution due to take place at the end of November in Busan, Republic of Korea. Climate change, biodiversity loss, plastic pollution and desertification / soil degradation are the 4 big crisis that are being discussed globally during this part of the year. As part of the Manuia Latam team I participated in the #Biodiversity COP16 Colombia (ended few days ago), and in #climatechange COP29 Azerbaijan (that is in its final days). As I leave Baku, some friends from YPO asked me to share some preliminary takeaways in this video, that circulated yesterday among its Planet Impact Network (thanks to the interest and support from Ricardo Politi and Laura Parolini) Now I’m heading to Busan, South Korea, for the 5th and last negotiation summit (#INC5) to have an international legally binding treaty to stop #plastic pollution. And from there, with part of the Ambition Loop team we’ll be going to the #desertification and soil degradation COP16Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, to participate and help to craft a concrete action agenda for non state members (cities, companies, finance sector, ngos, other stakeholders) to a dress this 4th crisis. Businesses are a key part of the equation that we need to resolve these 4 crisis. And the private sector should engage with these 4 global proceses for many reasons, ranging from learning to sharing practices, connecting and collaborating, listening and financing solutions. There’s no chance to have a better business in a collapsing environment, nor insert into communities that can’t thrive. We can’t have better businesses in a worsening world. We can’t have better business if we don’t adopt the available technologies in power generation, electrification in general, power storage, efficiency in resources usage that at the same time reduces operational costs, and so on and so forth. Many of the technologies we need are already there. We can’t have better business if we keep ourselves tied to those soon-to-be obsolete technologies that are worsening the world. Those assets won’t have the best yields in the future. We can’t have better business with less services from nature, wether those services are provided directly to our business or to parts of the value chain we participate in. And we are pushing nature to it’s bankruptcy every day we take more resources that those that nature can replenish. And as markets, when that bankruptcy trajectory make nature to fall, we will all fall with it. But we can do better. We will do better if we want. Together with Virginia Yanquilevich and Patricia Douma I am heading to COP29 Azerbaijan in Baku with one urgent goal: to help achieve access to safe and affordable drinking water 💧 for all. The stakes have never been higher. Around the world, climate change is fuelling devastating floods, droughts, and water scarcity looms. Last year at COP28 in the UAE, we raised our voice to advocate for expanding public drinking water infrastructure and an end to packaged water. As Water Champions, Dopper was proud to help shape the global conversation on water policy, calling for sustainable and accessible water solutions. Our mission to eliminate packaged water gained momentum as we united with pioneers and leaders, sharing actionable solutions to create a world where everyone can drink safe, affordable tap water. Over the past year, our journey has been both challenging and empowering. Dopper has joined forces with impactful alliances like the Innovation Alliance for a Global Plastics Treaty and Water Europe. Through advocacy in the European Parliament, strategic partnerships, and roundtables, we’ve strengthened our stance on system change. We've pushed forward on key legislative fronts, collaborating directly with leaders, including the Dutch Minister for the Environment, on the need for concrete action toward SDG 6.1—safe drinking water for all. Now, as we prepare for COP29 in Baku, our voice is more important than ever. We’re determined to keep water security and climate policy on the global agenda, no matter the political tides. The stakes are clear: 💲 Economic inequality grows as packaged water costs soar, and resources deplete with every bottle. 💧 Microplastics in our water and food supply are impacting public health, posing risks we can no longer ignore. 🌱 Plastic pollution from packaged water is choking our planet, while the CO2 emissions are 300 times higher than those of tap water. The time to act is now. We are calling on world leaders to help establish tap water and reusable bottles as the norm. It’s not only crucial for the planet and public health—it’s essential for a sustainable future. Let's make 2024 the year we turn words into action, ensuring accessible, clean, and affordable water for everyone.
