👻 The topic of #waste pollution (which is a consequence of overproduction, overconsumption and other irresponsible choices) unfortunately never gets old. We need to reduce waste instead of relying on recycling. ☢️Illegal waste trafficking is a problem both within Europe (see, for example, this investigation https://lnkd.in/e2DWUP3M and this https://lnkd.in/euSE5mV3) and when it concerns export of waste from Europe to other continents (https://lnkd.in/eRf2aKAD and https://lnkd.in/eRAQFyrJ ). 🔗 There is a also good overview published by the Global Investigative Journalism Network that includes a few more investigations on this topic: https://lnkd.in/e5gJ8EV9 🙏 Let us not rely on anyone propery recycling your waste. Do everything you can to reduce it. #earthinvestigations #environmentalinvestigations #wastepollution

🚨Textile waste will have to be incinerated in Europe, rather than #reused or #recycled, if the European Union does not act to protect the crisis-hit #textile #recycling industry, according to two key bodies🚨 The EU has been urged to provide immediate financial and legislative support to the sector to avoid a ‘domino effect’ which could cause irreversible #environmental damage and widespread #bankruptcies. Tackling Riverine Plastic Pollution: The AQPLA Project's Comprehensive Approach 🌊 Did you know that about 80% of marine litter comes from land-based sources, often transported by rivers? The Danube River Basin is no exception. Plastics, initially considered non-degradable, can break down into microplastics under sunlight and temperature changes, exacerbating pollution. The AQUATIC PLASTIC (AQPLA) project aims to combat this by providing a robust database and methodology to map riverine plastic waste. Using artificial barriers like Hydroelectric Power Plants (HPPs) and remote sensing technologies, AQPLA measures, monitors, and diverts plastic waste accumulations from nature to landfills, or ideally, back into the loop. We can't let #textiles go to waste 👖 ❗ As of 1 January 2025 Member States are obliged to separately collect textiles with NO treatment. Enormous amount of separately collected textiles are at risk to be burnt or landfilled! 🚨 The textiles sorting and recycling sector need immediate support as they are facing an unprecedented crisis that can trigger a domino effect with costly and environmental repercussions for municipalities and citizens. EuRIC - The European Recycling Industries Textiles and MUNICIPAL WASTE EUROPE have joined forces and warn EU policymakers to prevent a disaster for the industry and local communities. In our joint statement we explain what's happening and how to fix it 👇 https://lnkd.in/dNypssCj #wastehierarchy #circulareconomy #textilerecycling

The European Court of Auditors has found that some plastic waste declared as “recycled” by EU member states may in fact have been incinerated, dumped or sent to landfill. It warns that illegal waste disposal remains a lucrative activity for organised crime. In 2021 the EU introduced a revenue generation mechanism linked to plastic waste. Lefteris Christoforou, the ECA member responsible for the audit, says the mechanism has “too many weaknesses”, and encourages the commission to learn lessons before creating similar mechanisms in the future. Road Sweeping waste residue gully cleaning waste: Why do companies think it's okay to dispose of Road Sweeping waste and Gully Waste on the floor and amalgamate it with other wastes and then dispose of the waste incorrectly? Road Sweeping and gully arisings typically contain a mix of sand, stone, organic material fines, plastic rubbish, and other detritus. ♻️ According to Environment Agency legislation directive, for recycling to happen under EWC 20-03-03, Road sweeping and gully cleaning residue waste must undergo mechanical treatment before recycling. Yet, Amidst these regulations, we're compelled to ask: why is the Environment Agency turning a blind eye to the issue of illegal waste tipping by contractors and government road sweeping contractors? Let's delve into the shadows, unravel the mysteries, and ask the questions that need answers. Recycled water is becoming an increasingly vital resource for addressing global water scarcity. Countries like Singapore, Australia, and the United States are leading the way in using advanced technologies to treat and reuse wastewater for agricultural, industrial, and even potable purposes. Implementing recycled water systems helps reduce the demand on freshwater sources, conserves energy, and promotes sustainability. As water scarcity intensifies, more regions are adopting water recycling practices to ensure a reliable and safe water supply for future generations. Almar Water Solutions is at the forefront of developing and implementing recycled water projects, providing sustainable solutions to meet the growing global demand for water. #RecycledWater #WaterSustainability #InnovativeWaterSolutions #AlmarWaterSolutions

🌍 From today, May 20, 2024, the European Union is implementing new regulations. 🚛💼. 📜 Introducing the Waste Shipments Regulation, a significant step towards responsible waste management. This regulation is designed to tighten controls on waste exports to non-EU nations, thereby reducing the risk of environmental pollution and health hazards. It also aims to enhance traceability and promote recycling within and outside the EU, fostering a more sustainable and circular economy. 🔄🌱 🔍 Key highlights include: - Stricter controls on waste exports 🚫 - Temporary ban on plastic waste exports to non-OECD countries ♻️🛑 - Enhanced monitoring to prevent environmental degradation 🌿 - Streamlined digital procedures for intra-EU waste shipments 📲 - Stronger enforcement against waste trafficking 💪🚔 🌍💚 #WasteManagement #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #EURegulations To find out more: https://lnkd.in/ebuiZ6mW

A new briefing from the European Environmental Agency describes the current state of used and waste textiles management, the new obstacles standing towards circularity, and the policy and technical solutions we need. "If sorting and recycling capacities are not scaled up in Europe, there is a risk that significant amounts of collected textile waste will continue to end up in incinerators or landfills or be exported to regions outside the EU.
