This weeks' article by S.A. Rogers contemplates a topic that's relevant whether your forte is residential, commercial, civil or personal - eco-friendly carpet. Even though friendly is in the title the vetting process for sustainable carpet can be anything but. What about the backing? Where is it made? Is it treated? How much is it? These are just some of the questions one has to ask vendors when searching for truly environmentally safe, natural, non-toxic carpet. Luckily the article not only discusses some of the ways carpeting can be sustainable, including the use of natural fibers and non-toxic backing, but also lists the names of some carpet manufacturing companies that reuse waste material and offer take-back programs to recycle used carpet. For those that pay a premium for eco-friendly carpet (*cough* California businesses *cough cough*), the decision adds another layer once you factor in the carpet materials. Like making sure the sheep that provided the wool wasn't washed in a pesticide bath or if recycled plastics are really better considering the release of microplastics during the manufacture and use of these products is potentially harmful. I was shocked when I was in China a paper factory told us 40% of their mother reel recycled paper is sold to the UK and that the best recycled paper comes from America. so its been collected all the way around America shipped on a boat to Asia then deinked, bleached and then sent onto UK. where is then cut into toilet tissue and sold as made in the UK. That's not really what open sustainable supply chain should look like. #opensupplychain
