#Sharing an opportunity to contribute to The Uneven Tapestry of Intercultural Education and Research (Eds. Stella Anne Achieng, Ph.D & Dr. Fred Dervin) "The primary aim of this edited volume is therefore to provide a platform for scholars, educators and practitioners who have experienced marginalisation due to factors such as geographical location, linguistic background, identity, theoretical/ideological/political orientation, or any other form of discrimination. The editors are particularly interested in chapter proposals exploring: - Personal, professional and reflexive narratives of marginalisation within ICER. - Analyses of the impact of dominant paradigms, relationships and practices on the exclusion of diverse perspectives and voices. - Decolonial, postcolonial or other critical frameworks for further understanding and transforming ICER. - Strategies for promoting potential inclusivity and epistemological diversity in research, teaching and policy-making – impacting on the ‘uneven tapestry’."

This article deeply resonates with my professional experience and the current state of universities. In my case, university museums and archives are fracturing, like our social and financial fabrics with detrimental effects. University museums need to actively seek a "seat at the table" if they are to be sustainable! https://lnkd.in/dfm8tssx

Blayne Haggart & I wrote another piece on the weaponization of antisemitism to stifle academic speech in Canada. We're especially concerned about political pressure on Canadian universities to adopt the controversial IHRA definition of antisemitism, which would fundamentally chill speech & research on campus. Worryingly, some are calling for research funding to be tied to an academic's perceived compliance with the IHRA definition, & even monitoring of academics' professional & online activities. That's unacceptable & will do nothing to address antisemitism. https://lnkd.in/gw4B33vy

I am delighted to announce that my article, titled "Unlearning Northeast: Countering Militarised Realities with Peace Education", has been published as a chapter in the book "The Role of Pedagogy in Shaping the Socio-Political Reality of Society", published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. With Northeastern India as its thematic focus, the essay tries to unravel the violence and masculinity that have been ingrained into the societal fabric by romanticizing the gory details of destruction. It highlights the hidden intricacies that fuel and sustain perpetual wartime societies by studying the enthusiastic behaviors of children towards war, resulting from experiences of nationalistic bias and expulsion from the mainstream narrative. This essay further aims to critically analyze the peace education theory as a tool to bring about positive social change and explores the efficacy of such an intervention, framing recommendations from Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed.

Thank you to the HSG Impact Scholar Community for inviting our team member and inclusive language specialist, Dr. Anna-Katrin Heydenreich, to lead a workshop! We explored the importance of inclusive language in academic work, with a focus on gender and beyond. The language and vocabulary we use can reinforce, reproduce, or challenge structures of power and privilege. One question that arose was, "What are the top 3 ways to use more inclusive language?" We recommend following the three linguistic golden rules proposed by Prof. Dr. Anatol Stefanowitsch: “Do not depict others linguistically in ways that you would not like to be depicted in if you were in their place.“ “Do not depict others linguistically in ways in which they do not depict themselves to you.» “Do not depict others linguistically in ways in which they cannot depict you in return.» The next workshop on bias free writing (in German) is on Thursday, 5 - 7 pm, online, in cooperation with the HSG Writing Lab. Very interesting session on academic freedom this morning, moderated by Daniel Abdul Rahman, CEO of ASLI. However, I feel that the panel hasn’t addressed one issue: self-imposed regulation on academic freedom, especially in multicultural and multiracial societies. I wonder what universities can do about it. #THEasia

I could not agree more: “Any adoption of the IHRA definition in universities would profoundly imperil academic freedom, stifle essential scholarly debate and, perhaps most frustratingly, not effectively address antisemitism. […] “This push by Lyon, Housefather and their allies to impose an IHRA Working Definition loyalty test on the post-secondary sector is an egregious attempt to restrict academic freedom in Canadian universities. It is illiberal and anti-democratic, 21st century McCarthyism. “Canadian academics and universities should reject outright any proposal to link federal grant funding to vetting academics for their compliance with the IHRA definition. Publicly funded research should not be held to any political preconditions. Researchers need to be critical and unafraid to ask difficult, even controversial, questions, the results subject to evaluations for their scholarly merit, not on whether they meet an ideological purity test.”
