German container line Hapag-Lloyd AG has released its annual sustainability report this week, uncovering significant emissions reductions attributed to the uptake of LNG and biofuels. According to the report, the company increased its LNG consumption considerably from 4582mt in 2022, to 22769mt in 2023, a move that translated into greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions of 0.8mt over the last year. The report expands upon Hapag Lloyd’s commitment to the LNG pathway, underlining its incremental role in industry-wide decarbonisation. In a recent article, Ship & Bunker noted that the company plans to implement synthetic e-LNG into its fleet just two years from now, utilising LNG and bio-LNG emissions benefits in the meantime. Waiting is not an option. GHG emissions are cumulative and the longer we wait to reduce them the tougher, and more expensive, the decarbonisation challenge will be. LNG offers immediate greenhouse gas reductions and provides a safe, proven, practical, low-cost and low-risk pathway to decarbonisation via bio-LNG and renewable synthetic e-LNG. COMSTOCK COMPLETES INVESTMENT IN RENFUEL AND LIGNOL®   Comstock Inc. has completed the agreements with RenFuel. The current investment is up to $3 million over three years to commercialize our integrated technologies for producing renewable biofuels from lignocellulosic residuals and waste streams.   The integration of RenFuel’s Lignol© and Comstock’s Bioleum™ technologies are proven to convert lignocellulosic biomass residuals into renewable fuels at best-in-class yields, exceeding 378 liters of fuel equivalent (GGE) and a market-leading Green House Gas (GHG) emission reduction of more than 92%. This corresponds to a Carbon Intensity (CI) score of about 15.  RenFuel previously completed extensive preliminary engineering for a new biorefinery to produce about 75 thousand tonnes per annum (tpa) of the bio intermediate Lignol® for refining into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel in Europe. Currently, the requirements for inclusion of an additional 25 thousand tpa of biorefining capacity are based on Comstock’s commercially available Cellulosic Ethanol and Bioleum™ derived fuels technologies. Strengthening circular models is the objective of OIMCE - Osservatorio Italiano Materie Prime Critiche Energia proposals on recycling. These proposals include incentivizing collection of Waste from Electric and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) also through full application of the principle of Extended Producer Responsibility, supporting entrepreneurs committed to using new technologies, developing a market for recycled materials also through special taxation, and removing legislative barriers due for example to the classification of recyclable materials.
