**First Day at InnoTrans 2024: A Glimpse into the Future of Transportation** The first day at InnoTrans 2024 has been nothing short of exhilarating! From the moment I walked into the Messe Berlin exhibition halls, it was clear that the future of transportation is here. The atmosphere was buzzing with innovation, collaboration, and excitement as industry leaders, engineers, and innovators from around the world gathered to showcase their cutting-edge solutions. One of the highlights of the day was exploring the latest advancements in rail technology. Besides state-of-the-art high-speed trains to sustainable, energy-efficient rail systems, key trend visible across was Security and Networks. What stood out most was the emphasis on sustainability and digitalization. Smart rail systems, AI-driven infrastructure, and green mobility solutions were everywhere—reinforcing how the industry is rapidly transforming to meet the demands of the 21st century. innovation driving them over the next few days. 1st day charged with several interactions…Stay tuned as I share more insights and exciting discoveries from this global transportation hub! The road to InnoTrans 2024… part 2. Remember, it is a marathon, not a sprint 😉 ⏪ InnoTrans 2014 ⭐ Growing orders. A Desiro City train was on display for the announcement of our Thameslink train order in the UK. At €1.8bn, it was Siemens’ largest ever order in the UK and we would go on to deliver 1,140 rail carriages, which offered 50% more capacity. It included two world-class depots offering long-term service and maintenance with predictive maintenance and digital monitoring. ⏪ InnoTrans 2016 ⭐ Mireo: THE regional and commuter platform! The success of our Desiro led to the development of its little brother the Mireo. We called it ‘Intelligence on Rails’ at the time, and if I could go back, I would add ‘sustainability, and flexibility.’ The modular approach has gone on to be hugely popular and available in various formats and alternative drives to match local needs. Other highlights from the event included the Velaro for Turkey, and the C2 Metro for Munich. 🤝 The year after InnoTrans 2016 we acquired Hacon, signaling our move into software to fuel our digitalization growth further. #TransformMobilityForEveryone #TeamSiemens #InnoTrans2024

"Hamburg shows: ridepooling can enhance the overall public transport system by adding a component that makes it more attractive.” MOIA Director of Business Development Rainer Becker discussed with Martin Bill, Staatsrat BVM Hamburg, Raimund Brodehl, Managing Director hvv, and Cornelius Kiermasch, Head of Shared Mobility at Deutsche Bahn Connect, on the topic of ‘Best practices from Hamburg: Integrated everyday mobility – the plans of the city of Hamburg' at the international trade fair for transport technology InnoTrans.   Here are three takeaways: ➡️ Ridepooling can be an addition to the public transit network that encourages more people to join the overall system as it adds a component of comfort, convenience, and safety. ➡️ The public transport system can only be successful in jointly addressing mobility needs. ➡️ Digitization of the overall system is needed to make it easy to use and will be the key for more people to use public transport in their daily life.  #InnoTrans2024

Time to look back and to Reflect: Forty days ago, on September 25th, I signed alongside Daniel Zollinger an agreement at InnoTrans in Berlin, the leading international trade fair for transport technology, for the purchase of 129 new shunting locomotives from Stadler. This official event marked the culmination of an intense journey filled with challenges, achievements, and incredible teamwork. Nine months ago, this project was just an idea on paper. Today, thanks to the dedication, perseverance, and collaboration of all the teams (special thanks to Ramon Leisinger and Patrik Debrunner) involved, we've turned this vision into reality. ✅ What we achieved together: 🚧 Preparation: Clear planning, comprehensive market analysis, and a thorough needs assessment. 🤝 Partner collaboration: Leveraging our collective strengths to craft innovative and sustainable solutions. 🛠️ Problem-solving: Overcoming every obstacle with agility, determination, and creativity. 🌍 Sustainability: For the first time, incorporating sustainability criteria into the tender process for locomotives. 🎉 This success is the result of outstanding synergy between departments, partners, and industry experts: 👥 A very small team, but all required skills. 🗣️ Caring and collaborative people: Ready to challenge each other constructively, always with respect and open ears. 🌐 An extended project team providing insights and expertise whenever needed. ⚡ Quick implementation of decisions or change of direction. 🔍 A healthy mix of experience and foresight to stay ahead. 📚 Leveraging best practices to save time, allowing us to focus on what’s truly new and disruptive. ⏰ Never missing a milestone—delay was simply not an option. 📍 Optimal location to meet and negotiate—the logistic part of the project was not the most trivial part! 🛡️ A solid Project Manager (Thank you Marco Geering). 🎯 A committed top-management team: making timely, impactful decisions without micromanaging. 🤝 Well-chosen partners who brought professionalism, creativity, and ultimately, the willingness to go that extra mile to secure the deal.   The result? A successful negotiation and a meaningful step toward revitalizing the market. #Financing the #Transformation: Most part of this week I spent in Berlin together with my colleagues Russell Clifford and Friederike Schulz at #InnoTrans2024 meeting clients and market participants. A lot of discussions around #FinancingSolutions to help the German #PublicTransport market to close the quality and capacity gap. Quality and capacity gap is something everyone who uses #PublicTransport (like me) knows well. Of course, I use public transport BUT: I arrived two hours late in Berlin and I found out that after 1am in the morning there is no commuter railway available (in Berlin!!!; #IggyPop would not have composed its famous song “Passenger” in Berlin of 2024). Clients of us are ready to help the German PTAs... #InnoTrans2024: That event marked a significant #milestone in the global #TransportTechnology industry. With 170,000 participants, 2,940 exhibitors from 59 countries, occupying a vast 200,000 square meters of exhibition space, it became the largest edition in its history. This year’s event highlighted #KeyInnovations across multiple sectors, including #RailwayTechnology, #PublicTransport, and #Infrastructure, with a strong focus on #sustainability, #digitalization, and #eco-friendly transport solutions. The event displayed 133 new #vehicles, such as Siemens Mobility’s #Velaro high-speed train and Alstom’s #Coradia Max regional train. #Cutting-edge solutions were presented, ranging from #hydrogen-powered locomotives to AI-based algorithms for enhancing train timetabling and operations. Additionally, the fair fostered discussions on #AI in mobility, showcasing its potential to address workforce shortages and improve operational efficiency. For the German #RailwayIndustry, InnoTrans 2024 provided a crucial #platform for promoting the national strategy of modernizing and digitalizing rail networks. Federal Minister for Digital and Transport, Dr. Volker Wissing, emphasized the importance of innovation in overcoming challenges facing the sector. Deutsche Bahn took a leading role, presenting technologies aimed at reinforcing sustainable rail #growth and operational #reliability. Regarding #FinancialSolutions for the public transport market, there was considerable attention on #innovative financing mechanisms. In particular, rail operating companies (#ROSCos) continue to play a critical role by offering #flexible #leasing models for #RollingStock, enabling operators to invest in cutting-edge technologies without the full upfront costs. Additionally, discussions highlighted the importance of #public-private partnerships and EU funding programs as key components in financing future rail infrastructure developments across Germany. And last but not least #SustainableSecuritisations are an attractive refinancing tool. In summary, InnoTrans 2024 solidified its role as a #DrivingForce in shaping the future of transport, with substantial impacts on the German railway industry and broader #European public transport markets.

The intersection of policy and tech is the truest truth of our times. They’re inseparable and need to move in tandem for innovation to be meaningful and make a difference.
