Just Sustainability Transition in Tourism: Placing Justice in the Core Tourism confronts interconnected global crises, posing significant justice challenges to many communities. Disparities between the North and South, power asymmetries, social and environmental vulnerabilities, biodiversity loss, climate change, and historical injustices are some of the pressing issues. Efforts are underway to integrate justice into sustainability discourses, urging a re-evaluation of economic activities in tourism through the lenses of justice and sustainability. Recognising and including diverse communities, experts, genders, and traditional voices is essential for generating new insight on sustainable transformative options. Examining the role of justice in sustainability transitions is crucial for developing theoretical and empirical foundations to guide tourism communities and policy responses. The panel will discuss how this holistic approach can address the complex web of challenges, fostering a more just and sustainable future for tourism. I love it when I can bring my research into a practical context. And yesterday, I was lucky to do precisely that, presenting to our neighbours in the South Pacific as part of the ARC-funded project, "Developing a Transformative Tourism Model for the Pacific Islands." We had a lovely conversation with fellow islanders about what regenerative tourism means for island nations. Our islands largely depend on tourism but are also the most vulnerable to its impacts. I believe we can change the narrative of that extractive, sun-beach-sand tourism model that is so popular (and yet, so cookie-cutter 🥱) if 1) policymakers are open to a different way of thinking and 2) travellers prioritise connecting with community and place. After seeing the beautiful presentations from Kōrero o te `Ōrau and Te Ipukarea Society in the Cook Islands, I am more convinced than ever that the change w̶i̶l̶l̶ -is- happening from the ground up. From the early days of working in business development Consultancy to leading several local initiatives as well as serving as a Climate Action Leader, my journey has been driven by a passion for protecting our planet and its cultural heritage. Tourism opened my eyes to the beauty and value of our natural landscapes, from the stunning peaks of the Rwenzori Mountains to the dense jungles of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. But it also revealed the urgent need for heritage conservation and climate action. 🌱 Through various initiatives—such as #sustainable tourism projects, environmental education, and reforestation—I have dedicated myself to the protection of our #ecosystems, promoting responsible tourism, and empowering communities to take action against climate change. Each step forward has been fueled by the belief that we can balance development with preservation, ensuring that future generations can experience these natural wonders and cultural treasures. 🌍 Let us continue this journey together, taking small actions today that will lead to a more sustainable and equitable tomorrow. #MyJourney #TourismForDevelopment #HeritageConservation #ClimateAction #RwenzoriMountains #BwindiImpenetrableForest #SustainableTourism #MusingikaTourism #ConserveNature #ActForThePlanet #TogetherForChange
