The Lancet, a 200-year-old peer-reviewed medical journal from the UK, has been a trusted source of medical information for generations. With the highest impact factor, it has expanded into a family of more than 20 specialty journals and has set up several global Lancet Commissions on important issues in medicine and healthcare. However, in its 200th year, the journal is acknowledging its complicit involvement in the facilitation and expansion of colonialism and British imperialism. It has also admitted to providing space and voice to write-ups supporting eugenics and prejudices. This is an important step towards accountability and a reminder that we must continuously examine the role of institutions in perpetuating systemic biases. #Colonialism #Imperialism #Racism #Lancet #HealthInequitues #Medicine #SocialMedicine #Healthcare

Global suicide statistics are sobering. When someone is in a suicidal crisis, good clinical care is paramount, but a broader approach is needed to prevent people from reaching the point of crisis in the first place. Published today in The Lancet, experts from the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences call for governments to address societal factors that contribute to suicidal risk and a holistic public health approach to prevention, as well as good clinical care → unimelb.me/4d4cC1D

Why have chronic diseases been on the rise in LMICs for many decades now? And how is this connected to aging populations? Which challenges do fragile states with respect to Maternal and Child Health face and what can be done to improve MNCH indicators in such countries? These and other pressing questions were part of my #PublicHealth lecture at the Medizinische Hochschule Hannover(MHH). Soon, the current interdisciplinary Public Health Master program will not charge tuition fees anymore and thus, be open to far more students. Public lecture about evidence-based policy development. Fantastic progress made, but ideology is interfering. I point out how UK NICE ME/CFS guidance is a parody of the synthesis and guideline procedures developed over the last 30 years. I argue they remove hope, evidence-informed interventions, and are harmful to public health https://lnkd.in/e9whYcs6

A new Oxford University Press book edited by Professor Rhiannon Tudor Edwards and Dr Catherine Lawrence and co-authored by many past and present members of the Centre for Health Economics and Medicines Evaluation (CHEME) takes a life-course perspective, from conception to death, to explore the health economics of well-being and well-becoming. Health Economics of Well-being and Well-becoming across the Life-course follows a life-course model with chapters aligned to pregnancy and early years, adolescence, working age, and older age phases of life. It enables the reader to think about older age in a different way and asks them to consider where we should be investing in cost-effective interventions to support the prevention of chronic disease, disability, and premature death later in life. This book is for health economists, public health and health system researchers, students of health economics, medicine and public health, as well as local and national policymakers. Dr. Celina Yong, MD, MBA, MSc, a CARE faculty member, has recently published a paper titled “Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Aortic Valve Replacement Among Medicare Beneficiaries in the United States, 2012-2019” in the American Journal of Medicine. The study found that aortic valve replacement rates within 6 months of aortic stenosis admission are lower for Black, Hispanic, and Asian individuals compared to White individuals. These race-related differences in aortic stenosis treatment reflect complex issues in diagnosis and management, warranting a comprehensive reassessment of the entire care spectrum for disadvantaged populations. Impactful Insights from the HEALing Communities Study 🚨 NIH-Funded Intervention: Key Findings on Opioid Overdose Crisis 🚨 Despite our best efforts, a recent NIH-funded study showed no statistically significant reduction in opioid-related overdose deaths. However, the HEALing Communities Study offers invaluable lessons for future interventions: Implementation Science: The study highlights the importance of providing communities with the infrastructure to make data-driven decisions. 👉 Dr. Nora D. Volkow, NIDA Director, emphasized: "We need to continue developing new tools and approaches for addressing the overdose crisis, particularly in the era of fentanyl." 🔗 Read the full study in the New England Journal of Medicine #OpioidCrisis #PublicHealth #EvidenceBased #CommunityHealth #NIH
