On day 2️⃣ of #COP16 IIED's Paul Steele hosted an event at the Finance & Biodiversity Pavilion on 'Building and scaling biodiversity credit projects led by Indigenous Peoples, Afro-descendant and local communities' with members of the Communities Advisory Panel (CAP), a group of Indigenous Peoples and local communities from around the world who have come together to discuss and influence the emerging biocredit market. At that event Miguel Chindoy, member of the Kamëntšá Indigenous People of Sibundoy, Putumayo, Colombia and member of CAP discussed, "Cultural diversity is linked with biological diversity… The question is, what is the relationship between the Indigenous practices and biodiversity. From when we are born, to our death, our path is linked to biodiversity… We want you to understand that if we are to save the planet we must understand other ways to govern… There are a lot of ways to measure biodiversity… The whole system of knowledge of Indigenous People must be recognised for it’s importance to biodiversity conservation and financial mechanisms must recognise this contribution by Indigenous People. We understand it’s important to unify scientific knowledge and Indigenous knowledge… This type of work needs to be collective and must be in commune. Risks are minimised if decisions are taken in collaboration with the community… We have to balance between rationality and spiritually." #COP16Colombia #Indigenous #biodiversity #biocredits

🌍✨ Two weeks ago, I had the great honor of attending the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) COP 16 in Cali, Columbia! The conference, themed "Peace with Nature," brought together delegates from 196 countries to discuss the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). Key takeaways: ✨ Emphasis on halting and reversing biodiversity loss by 2030 ✨ Establishment of the "Cali Fund" for benefit-sharing of genetic resources ✨ Significant progress in reducing deforestation and integrating nature conservation with climate protection ✨ Greater involvement of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs) The conference highlighted the vital connection between biodiversity, human well-being, and economic stability. For the #RealEstateIndustry, which contributes nearly 30% to global biodiversity loss, the message was clear: We must take responsibility and integrate biodiversity risks into our risk management frameworks and strategies. The lack of financing for necessary biodiversity protection measures poses increased risks, costs, and uncertainties for real estate projects and existing buildings. However, it also opens up opportunities for innovation, new technologies, and stronger resilience against environmental changes. As we move forward, it's essential to consider biodiversity in all aspects of real estate investments - from location assessment to tenant engagement. Let's work together to make biodiversity a priority and drive meaningful change in the #builtenvironment! Please refer to the attached overview for more detailed outcomes and impacts for real estate, including a checklist to guide your efforts. #Sustainability #RealEstate #Biodiversity #COP16 #GreenBuilding #EnvironmentalStewardship #Innovation #PwC #PwCRealEstate WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development Project Everyone

In less than 30 days, the Conference of the Parties on the Convention on Biological Diversity (#COP16) will meet in Cali, Colombia, the first time since the adoption of the Global Biodiversity Framework (#GBF) in 2022. Attended by participants from over 190 countries, with 14K registered participants, COP16 will explore progress on the implementation of the GBF and assess national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs). The theme of this year's COP is "Peace with Nature,” a recognition that it’s time to reconsider the relationship we have with the environment and activate a: 1) value shift, 2) economic shift and 3) policy shift in our approach to nature. These 3 shifts are embedded in UNDP's Nature Pledge, the organization's flagship commitment to supporting countries to deliver the goals and targets of the Global Biodiversity Framework and the Sustainable Development Goals. But where does Asia and the Pacific stand on biodiversity? And what solutions are regional business, government and multilateral actors offering? 👉 Learn more about COP16 and the Global Biodiversity Framework at <https://lnkd.in/gQaErHyi> 👉 Visit UNDP’s Nature Pledge website to learn more about UNDP’s commitment to support countries reach their GBF ambitions. <https://lnkd.in/gKNuvaiw> 👉 See our recently released report, Biodiversity and the Business and Human Rights Agenda for background on the state of nature in Asia and the role of industry in reversing biodiversity loss. <https://lnkd.in/gi8cRyzb>

Did COP16 make real progress on biodiversity? Andreas Gyllenhammar, Chief Sustainability Officer at Sweco, has attended the negotiations in Cali, Colombia, and offers an in-depth analysis of the outcome. Here are the main takeaways: ➡ Inclusion of indigenous people. The decision to establish a permanent subsidiary body to represent indigenous interests under the Convention is seen as a major win by indigenous groups and local communities. ➡ Benefit-sharing from genetic resources. The Cali Fund was established for the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits derived from the use of digital sequence information (DSI) on genetic sources. ➡ Funding shortfalls. Negotiations stalled over the creation of a new global nature fund. Disagreements persisted regarding the governance and mobilisation of financial resources necessary to meet biodiversity targets. ➡ Unresolved monitoring framework. Delegates failed to agree on a comprehensive monitoring framework to assess progress toward biodiversity goals. Global biodiversity is continuing to decline at an alarming rate. Experts estimated that 37% of species might be threatened or driven to extinction by 2100. To discuss how to solve these issues, politicians and civil society members will gather in Cali, Colombia, during the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 16). What is the Convention on Biological Diversity? The Convention on Biological Diversity was established in 1992 to protect biodiversity, promote sustainable use of natural resources and ensure fair benefit-sharing from genetic resources. Why does it matter? The Convention on Biological Diversity matters because it provides a global framework for conserving biodiversity and natural resources, which is critical for the health of our planet and the well-being of future generations. It helps focus on turning commitments into action—safeguarding our planet's biodiversity. What will COP 16 focus on? The main goal is to create a new framework for a more nature-positive future: 🌍 Implementing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (the Biodiversity Plan) into international action 🤝 Investing and collaborating with nature to bolster resource mobilization and technical cooperation 🚀 Accelerating progress on access and benefit-sharing Going forward, the development of robust, accurate and impactful nature-based solution projects will be the starting point to mobilize resources for nature. Resource mobilization for nature and technical cooperation is vital to both protect biodiversity and enhance the capacity of businesses and societies to coexist with nature. This will require a shift in focus to capacity building on biodiversity projects alongside creating an understanding of the most suitable financial instruments to implement such projects. Meo Carbon Solution's Climate Finance Hub is ready to help project developers and the public and private sectors design ready-to-invest initiatives and build knowledge on innovative financial instruments that can support and protect biodiversity.
