The Art of Forgetting: An Invaluable Skill for Future Filmmakers? "Once the film is out there, it is dead to me. I just lived the film in the process." - Nicholas Winding Refn (Director of Drive, The Neon Demon) In today's day and age, it is very common for filmmakers to cling to their past films (especially if they failed) and become voracious storytellers of how they learned from their experiences. But are we overdoing this? Are we giving too much attention to our "legacy"? What if filmmakers learn how to fail, fail faster, and move on? As I mentioned in a previous post, due to the highly subjective nature of films, if we treat marketing as a separate branch, even if a film fails, we can still ensure it makes money. This ensures that we can forget our films without worrying about finances. #Filmmaking #FilmIndustry #CreativeProcess #FilmmakerAdvice

Spooky season has officially begun!! 👻 Now, confession time: I'm that person who jumps at every scare in horror movies. 😬 But when it comes to making them? That's a whole different story! A few years ago, I had the incredible experience of working on a short horror film directed by my brilliant friend and colleague Jose Escorcia, whose talent never fails to amaze me. His vision for this film was a whole other level, and I was honored to be part of his creative team as a Production Designer, teaming up with the talented April Osborne. On top of that, we counted with the excellent performances of Vivian Wu and Luke Steinborn! But what really stuck with me wasn’t just the creepy sets or the jump scares. It was the sense of connection we built along the way. Filmmaking is all about bringing people together. Whether you're building a tense, spooky atmosphere or telling a laugh-out-loud comedy, the goal is the same: to build a meaningful connection between the filmmakers, the story, and the audience. It’s really fulfilling to see a group of creatives come together, each bringing their own unique perspective, to turn an idea into reality! I I recently had the opportunity to watch an incredible short film and I wanted to share my thoughts. When starting out, many people struggle with making short films. I believe the reason is that we don’t watch as many short films as we do feature-length movies. Most people try to cram the scope of a feature film into a short format, and it just doesn’t work. Once you start watching more short films and understanding the medium, you can create a great short film. You only have time for one key event to take place. Here's the formula: - Quick setup - Punch - Plot twist This award-winning short film demonstrates this perfectly. Check it out! https://lnkd.in/eFtkw6vs

🎃 Halloween isn’t just for costumes and candy. 🎃 It’s a goldmine for microbudget filmmakers. Let me explain. 🧛♂️ The Halloween effect: Horror has a unique spot in the market—audiences expect a bit of grit and rawness, which microbudget films already thrive on. Big production values aren’t what horror fans want. They’re after atmosphere, tension, and creativity. 💡 Built-in virality: Audiences love sharing horror. A well-executed jump scare or a clever plot twist makes horror one of the most shareable genres out there. Low-cost, high-reward storytelling can go viral quickly when done right. Your movie could be the next cult favorite. 👻 Fast-track to festivals: Film festivals love a good horror flick, especially microbudget gems with fresh voices. With Halloween as the ultimate premiere day, you’ll already be tapping into a market hungry for something new. Counterpoint? Some say horror films are “overdone” or only for big-budget special effects. But here’s the thing: horror thrives on innovation, not massive production spend. If you’ve been dreaming about making a film but held back by budget or time, why not make Halloween 2025 your premiere goal? 🎬 💥 Join Scratch to Screen, a year-long journey to make your microbudget horror film—from concept to premiere—on the ultimate night of the year for horror.
