If something is worth doing, it’s worth doing well. And if you’re doing it well, how can you do it better? Think on this as you sip your wine tonight. You probably started your wine drinking career as a youngster with the cheapest plonk and as you have got older, your palate has steadily improved. At the same time, your curiosity has increased, seeking out wines from lesser known areas, and as you have got ever more sophisticated, perhaps lesser known vineyards from the more well known areas. So you’re doing well with your appreciation of fine wine, but can you do better? Perhaps a tour of a vineyard, see the grapes on the vine, and then look on at the maturation, blending and bottling process, and then of course onto the tasting. It may be the same wine in the same bottle that you buy from your supermarket, but it just seems to taste better when you’re drinking it in the vineyard from which it emanates. Scientifically there is probably no difference, but taste is an emotional experience. So now you’re doing very well, but can you do better? Yes. You could join me at the Quinta Da Pacheca in the Douro Valley in the harvest time. You can pick the grapes. You can stomp the grapes. And of course you can taste the wine. It’s not wine from grapes that you have just stomped, of course, but you are now part of the story of wine from Quinta Da Pacheca, a story going back to the 16th Century, producing some of Portugal’s (and the world’s) finest wines and a leader when it comes to wine tourism. Just to round off the whole experience, your hotel room can be a converted wine barrel, with great views, romance wafting up the slopes with the morning mist, and a wonderful breakfast waiting for you. If you got a little carried away with your stomping, there is an excellent spa to soothe any aching muscles. And just as you have become part of the Quinta Da Pacheca history, so too does the vineyard become part of your story. This is now your wine. Are you just going to drink that wine tonight or can you do better? #wine #douro #travel #notjusttravel
There is nothing like being amongst the people and the vineyard that produces your favourite wine.
