Developing champions in sport and life since 20 years Aspire Academy . Great leadership, great ambition, ambitious execution
Qatar are Champions of Asia, again Over the past decade, Aspire Academy has played a leading role in Qatar's unprecedented football golden era selecting, nurturing, shaping, training, preparing, producing players, teams and coaches who are determined and capable of rewriting history and capturing the hearts of a full nation. Everyone at Aspire, in football, in sports, in education, in all support functions, those here now and those who left along the way but also paved the way and left their mark, has worked relentlessly, passionately, generously, with humility, camaraderie, and loyalty to the country's mission and vision in sport. I take this opportunity to share a heartfelt message of recognition and gratitude to everyone at Aspire Academy. Over the years, they have put their hearts and souls into this place, aiming high and setting goals that many outside thought impossible. Since 2014, Qatar's national teams have finished top 4 in Asia a record 6 times, including all age groups, with 3 Asian Cup Championships. In this 2024 victory, 16 players representing a total of 10 generations of Aspire players born from 1992 to 2002 were part of a team that, as in 2019, was led by a great head coach and coaching staff with an Aspire past. Qatar's starting 11 in the final included 8 Aspire Academy players from all those generations, a staggering number and range unlikely to be matched by any other academy / national team in the world. This consecutive Asian Cup triumph crowns that 10-year historic cycle that will surely be put in perspective within Asian football with time. I am incredibly proud of the team of people I am fortunate to work with. They always put ‘side before self’ and are devoted to a job full of purpose, personal attachments, and tangible results. Often, people point out to our facilities, technology, analytics - all ancillary elements of what Aspire Academy is. Make no mistake, it’s all about the human element, the talent of individuals on a collective journey. Football, sport, and life do not stop, and a new cycle begins. New players and new coaches will come, the ambition must remain. Today Qatar, one of the smallest countries in Asia, is one of the continent’s top nations in Asian football. That should continue as the target, in football and in every sport the Academy undertakes. #asiancup2023 #aspireacademy #winningtogether #footballlegacy

As I enjoyed this Father's Day weekend watching the Euro Cup with my kids, I'm reminded of the beauty of the game and the importance of teamwork. This tourney gives us an opportunity to reflect on the tournament's rich history and the teams that have etched their names in football glory. Individual talent has always been crucial, but we've seen time and again that it's not just about having stars on your team - it's about a cohesive unit working towards a common goal. Johan Cruyff's legendary words resonate deeply: "Football is a team sport, and no one player can win a game alone." We've seen teams with less individual talent achieve greatness through teamwork and cohesion, like Spain's 2010 World Cup-winning team, who were a masterclass in teamwork, with Andrés Iniesta saying, "We are a team, a family, working together towards our goals." Similarly, Germany's 2014 World Cup-winning coach, Joachim Löw, attributed their success to team unity, saying, "The team is the star, not individual players." As we look ahead to the 2024 Euro Cup, let's remember that it's not just individual brilliance, but teamwork, strategy, and a shared vision that will lift the trophy. While we'll see moments of individual genius from players like Ronaldo, Mbappé, Musiala and Kane, it's the teams that harness their collective strength that will achieve true glory. So, as we celebrate the beautiful game and the teams that make it special, let's remember that greatness is not just individual skill, but collective genius. Who will be the 2024 champions? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain - a united team effort, shared vision, and passion burning brighter than the brightest star will achieve true glory! And as you cheer on your favorite team, remember that these principles apply to your own team, whether in business, sports, or life - together, you can achieve greatness! #EuroCup #TeamWork #Soccer #Football #UnityInDiversity

Who here watched the Euros 2024 yesterday? ⚽ 🇪🇸 🏆 I had always a soft spot for Spain ever since my previous trips to Barcelona and Madrid. So I couldn't resist cheering on Spain! But during that nail-biting second half, watching the Spanish team, I remember a quote I once heard "You can go fast by yourself, but together we can go further." Here are my key learning points about Spain's winning campaign: 1. Spain did not have a team of established superstars, summed up by the fact its winners didn’t have a single player on the 30-man shortlist for the previous year’s Ballon d’Or. Every player in the team played for one another. There was no ego or Star player mentality! In our business development do we tend to go solo because we often think we are the star player? More often its wiser to work in a strong team as it means having a support system to celebrate wins and pick you up after setbacks. 2. A great coach. Luis de la Fuente was essentially an internal appointment. He won European Championships for Spain with the under-19 and under-21 sides before being handed the full national team job following the 2022 World Cup. He was a father figure as much as a tactician. He built a family with the Spanish National players who respected him. Decisive in his team selection and substitutions, he made an importance difference to the team. Do we have a coach/mentor who can help us see our blind spots and also unlock your hidden potential? A great coach also can help you see your strengths when you can't and help maximise it to guide you to your goal. Finding a right coach and mentor is imperative to your success! 3. Spain has evolved to be a much more versatile team than in the past. Instead of only focusing on possession play, they build a new strength in counter-pressing after losing the ball and guarding against counter-attacks. They are much more direct going forward unlike the old spanish tiki taka style. Instead of playing it safe, they took risks in their attacks and its players had the complete freedom to express themselves. Do we always rely on past strategies and tactics? Or do we constantly evolve and make changes to adapt to the new environment? Old solutions may need to be tweaked or over-hauled to maintain success in an ever changing buisness environment. Change is the only constant! So just like Spain who was not the favourite to win the tournament, most of us here aren't favourites to succeed in our chosen field. Everyone loves an underdog story. Lets play the best games in our lives to succeed! Hope this inspires you and please share your comments! #lessonsfromeuro2024 #buisnessleadership

🌟 A Gateway to Professional Football with IFS 🌟 I am thrilled to share some great news with our community of football professionals. During our last Scouting Camp in Serbia🇷🇸(Belgrade) last March, three young talents seized their chance brilliantly. Thanks to their performance, they were selected for a trial with FK Sloboda Užice, a professional club in the Serbian Prva Liga (2nd division). From July 1st to 7th, these three players joined the professional group of FK Sloboda Užice for their summer preparation. Not only did they have the opportunity to train with professionals, but they also participated in a friendly match against a first-division team from Montenegro. This experience allowed them to understand the demands of high-level football, discover a new culture, and make enriching connections. This adventure is concrete proof of our commitment at IFS (International Football Scouting) to offer real and tangible opportunities to young talented footballers. 🏆 IFS - Your Passport to Professional Football! 🏆 The results of our March camp in Serbia are a tremendous source of pride. 🏉 3 Things I learnt from Rugby Sevens I enjoyed watching the Rugby Sevens last weekend. It was exciting to see that 40% of the tickets were sold to tourists and even more exciting to see their interesting outfits and the busy traffic at Causeway Bay! A few things came across my mind while watching the match and enjoying the alcohol - call me workaholic.... or work life integration 🏉 Always upgrade yourself This year was the final year that the Sevens took place in the HK Stadium. Starting next year, the Sevens will be hosted at a bigger and newer Sports Park at Kai Tak - that can sit 50,000 audience members! If Hong Kong is upgrading the sports facility, what skills do you plan to upgrade this year? 🏉 Find your USP - Unique Selling Point When I think of Hong Kong, I think of dim sum, LKF, and Rugby Sevens. Echoing back in my previous posts, I shared about finding your strength. Finding your passion and strength is very important because it elevates your career and life. Doing something you are good at and passionate about gives you a higher ROI and it is more sustainable than working at a highly paid job but without passion. What unique skills do you bring to the table when people think of you? 🏉 Have a bigger vision When I saw people competing, they were fighting hard to win for their teams, and their countries rather than themselves. This reminded me of how narrow minded I was at my first job. I only focused on making money. As I grew older, I found my happiness coming from helping candidates finding jobs and clients landing the right talent. Today, I find joy the most from coaching others, seeing them using their full potential to succeed and climb to next levels and contributing back to the community. How big is your vision?

Gaining more #sportscience experience in 3 steps Alot of students say to me there are no jobs or work experience opportunities out there, so why don't you create your own... Step 1 Choose a sport e.g. Rugby Union Step 2 Go to the National Governing Body website for the that sport, enter your postcode and set the distance for 20 miles. From the RFU website, I typed in rugby clubs within 20 miles of where I live and there are 17 clubs in my area (image below) - that is 17 potential opportunities to develop your skills Step 3 Reach out to each club and explain what you can offer and how you can help their athletes. I guarantee you wont get a response from every club but all you need is that 1 club to give you a chance to show them what you can do Top Tip: Do not send a generic email or message, make an effort, make it personal - find out key contacts e.g. the club captain, Head Coach, have a look at how their season is going

I picked up an interesting point of view from Dan Abrahams, host of the Sport Psych Show Podcast, global consultant and sports psychologist with 28 years experience in high performance sport. Dan's article on Rugby SA is interesting in that SA Rugby seems to have got it right where most other sporting codes in South Africa have struggled or failed to find any traction or remain internationally competitive, given governmental/societal demands for racial transformation in sport. Today, most of SA sporting codes would seem to have been “captured” by individuals focused on their personal enrichment rather than the development of the sport or the empowerment of the athletes. The complete lack of engagement or conversation with stakeholders is pervasive and endemic. The lack of transparency or real engagement has deeply damaged the respective codes, ultimately resulting in below par performances for cricket, football, athletics, water polo and may others. Question - is it not time for change, using rugby as the role model to guide our trajectory. Rassie and his Springboks should be recognized for the amazing contribution they have made to SA Rugby and SA Sport in general. They have proven it is possible to get results if everyone is given a voice and “genuinely” engaged. Is it not time for Swimming SA's Fritz and Adriaanse to move over and let people with a genuine love for aquatics to take the sport to the next level?

The best international rugby team in the world is South Africa… Rassie Erasmus - intermittently their head coach and director of rugby is the person many suggest has been the most influential in and on this incredible team. Every year, South Africa have alignment days – days that they commit to discussing their strategies, tactics, game plans, and approaches to competition. They talk, they discuss, they converse – little else! The players and the coaches in a room talking, discussing, conversing. Little else. Not much training, if any! Not much physical conditioning, if any! They talk, they discuss, they converse – little else! I’ve written about this often - the lack of appreciation for conversations in professional sport. A paucity of discussion is a grave error. It is a tool coaches, players, and teams fail to use to their expense. Conversation drives knowledge. It deepens meaning. It broadens shared understanding. it elicits solutions to problems yet to be experienced, but are inevitable in the challenging landscape of competition. I would suggest that in my 20 years as a Sport psychologist working in professional sport only once have I really been given the opportunity to expand on conversation in an organisation. The past two season at Feyenoord, Arne Slot gave me permission to conduct small group sessions with players to discuss the nuances of competitive mindset. Far from perfect (we didn’t have long enough), but at least something. I know from feedback that players benefited from sharing challenges, ideas, and solutions. Let’s briefly return to the South African rugby team. Imagine if you will 30 of the biggest, most brutal sporting competitors on planet earth talking strategy, talking tactics, talking solutions. Just talking. Just discussing. Just conversing… …this is excellence. This is sporting excellence. This is how you get winning done! Conversation is a tool for excellence that professional sport would do well to become acquainted with.
