It was a privilege to be a sponsor of the Annual Hoffa Foundation golf tournament this year. Amazing organization that turned a deeply personal tragedy into a mission to help with addiction and recovery in the community.

Collaborating and Learning: Miami's Jail Diversion Model Alongside other community leaders, Central Florida Foundation joined Peace and Justice Institute on a trip to Miami to learn more about the region's way of addressing how individuals with mental and substance use disorders come into contact with and move through the criminal justice system. The workshop, entitled "Improving the Court and Community Response Decriminalizing Mental Illness: The Miami Model," enabled us to gain a better understanding of this program that has had promising results. As PJI's Executive Director Rachel Allen says, this system has been a way for "hope and recovery" to happen instead of more incarceration. Watch PJI's video on this experience here: https://buff.ly/4bhRQM1 ____ But will this work for Central Florida? Rarely does a model fit perfectly into another region, but this program provides insights on what could work here. This process of learning about other promising models is all part of collaborative community work of finding what works elsewhere, understanding about what parts can be applied to our region, and developing the necessary changes that would need to take place to fit our unique community. So, to answer this question, this is one step in this process of creating a new path forward for this complex issue. As a community foundation, we are so grateful to our Fundholders who power this type of collaborative approach to solving complex social issues. Without philanthropists, this wouldn't have been possible. Thank you for helping us in our mission of building community by building philanthropy.

Self-Injury Awareness Month Introduction to Self-Injury Definition: Self-injury, such as cutting or burning, is the act of intentionally harming oneself as a way to cope with emotional pain, stress, or other overwhelming feelings. Misconceptions: There are many misconceptions about self-injury, including the belief that it's only done for attention. In reality, self-injury is often a private way for individuals to cope with their emotions and is not a sign of weakness or attention-seeking. Stigma: The stigma surrounding self-injury can prevent individuals from seeking help. It's important to create a non-judgmental and supportive environment for those who may be struggling. Dialogue: Let's start a conversation about self-injury. By discussing it openly and without judgment, we can help reduce stigma and support those in need. Resources: National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-TALK (8255) Crisis Text Line: Text "HELLO" to 741741 Self-Injury Outreach and Support: sioutreach.org #SelfInjuryAwareness #EndTheStigma #MentalHealthSupport

In Memory of the Victims: A Call for Unity and Support The recent tragedy in Southport has deeply impacted our community, with two young lives lost to a horrific knife attack. Our hearts go out to the families and friends of the victims, who are facing an unimaginable loss. It is crucial to honor their memories and acknowledge the profound sorrow that has touched our society. In the aftermath of this tragedy, there has been a rise in anti-immigration protests fueled by fear, anger, and misinformation. The narrative surrounding the attacker has been distorted in public discourse, contributing to a climate of hostility, particularly towards Muslim communities. It is important to recognize that these protests often stem from misunderstanding and fear, exacerbated by sensationalized media coverage and fake news. Now is the time to emphasize community solidarity. Instead of allowing fear to divide us, we should strive to understand one another and cultivate empathy. By coming together to support each other and engaging in open dialogue, we can dispel misconceptions and build bridges of understanding. Addressing the underlying issues that may have led to this tragic event is crucial. We must consider how mental health services can better support young people with autism and other challenges. This tragedy underscores a critical gap in mental health services that needs to be addressed to prevent similar incidents from occurring. At Action Family Network, we understand the importance of providing tailored support to young individuals facing difficult behaviors. Our mentoring services focus on a trauma-informed approach to empower individuals and prevent such tragic events. By connecting young people with mentors who comprehend their unique experiences, we can foster resilience and positive behaviors. As we honor the victims of this tragedy, let us take actionable steps to create a more inclusive and supportive society. Advocating for improved mental health services and creating spaces where young people feel heard and supported is essential. Together, we can build a future grounded in compassion and community resilience. #actionfamillynetwork #race #racism #Southport #riot #violence
