Calian and ST Engineering iDirect produced a whitepaper on satellite resource orchestration. Satellite payloads are increasingly becoming more adaptable and complex. As satellite manufacturers and operators design and build new satellites, there’s a growing need to fully leverage this enhanced potential, particularly once the payload is on-orbit. Orchestrating satellite payload as well as baseband resources will enable enhanced services and quality of experience for fixed and mobility end-users and allows for dynamic, real-time management of resources to maximize efficiency—and ultimately sellable capacity—of these essential assets. Older systems were metered, so users never know what to expect on their monthly bill. That too has or is going away. Newer service by several providers are using more satellites, in a lower orbit with improved hardware that greatly increases stability, reliability and signal quality. Satellites have become an indispensable part of the modern space industry. Currently, there are over 10,000 active satellites in orbit, and their numbers are rapidly increasing each year. One key reason for this growth is that developing and building satellites is becoming progressively easier. The general phases of satellite development are as follows: Set goals and objectives, formulate requirements for the system. Select orbit and payload. Select suitable components for the required payload. Order and purchase components, await their arrival. Start the regulatory approval process. Receive the components, test them and assemble the ground mock-up of the satellite. Find a clean room and build the flight version. Test the flight version of the satellite . Send it to the launch site (or to brokers for additional testing). Prepare the Mission Control Centre and wait for launch. 🛰 https://lnkd.in/emzx3me2

Do you know that in space just 2 watt of heat would make a teaspoon red-hot? And now imagine 70W system having just 10 cm in size and hundreds of sensitive electronics components inside! That is the typical constrain which ThrustMe has to manage while developing its pioneering iodine-fuelled electric propulsion systems. Small satellites have more and more available power. While this is great for their capacity to perform sophisticated missions, it can lead to challenging thermal management issues. Contrary to sub-systems at larger satellites, the heat in each sub-systems needs to be independently controlled and handled. At ThrustMe we have developed systems with thermally passive management, handling power densities of more than 700 W/m2. The low excess power/heat is offloaded to the satellite frame or to other payloads and doesn't require any dedicated radiators. ThrustMe thrusters are the ideal neighbors to any subsystem! #space #thermaldesign #thermalmanagement #propulsion

The upper mid-band from 7–24 GHz has attracted considerable interest to expand cellular services due to their balance of coverage and capacity. A key challenge for deploying terrestrial cellular service in the upper mid-band is the need to coexist with incumbent services, particularly commercial communication satellites. Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite mega constellations can enable new services and provide vital high-capacity coverage in rural areas where fixed infrastructure is costly. Due to their narrow beam widths and relatively low altitudes, the latest generation of satellites are particularly sensitive to terrestrial cellular systems, particularly high power base stations in rural areas. This project seeks to evaluate potential interference of terrestrial cellular services with satellite systems in the upper mid-band and develop methods to mitigate it.
