What is “risk”? A team of Spears Business P.h.D. alums, including Dr. Jorge Arteaga-Fonseca (pictured) and OSU’s Johnny D. Pope Chair in Entrepreneurship, Dr. Matthew Rutherford, set out on a mission to clear up the confusion for entrepreneurs. The OSU researchers had heard the buzzword that simultaneously incites fear in rule-followers and inspires thrill-seekers. Often, punchy phrases such as “worth the risk” and “risk and reward” appear in articles and motivational speeches without precise definitions or context, leaving aspiring entrepreneurs to wonder what risks they actually face. The result was their paper, “What Is Risk, Exactly? Reviewing Construct Heterogeneity Across Business Fields and Implications for Entrepreneurship Research,” published in the Journal of Management, an A-plus journal on the Spears School of Business list. Daria Hakola’s dissertation challenges the common belief that bigger always means better in business, revealing that strong growth intentions can sometimes backfire and overlook the importance of external factors and smart entrepreneurial choices. She advocates for a more nuanced definition of business success - one that values scaling orientation, strategic alignment, and the flexibility to adapt to shifting conditions. “Addressing three grand limitations in entrepreneurship research - such as the role of an entrepreneurial agency, the complexity of growth, and external factors like institutions - provides a more nuanced understanding of business performance”, says Hakola. A new Archbridge working paper from Justin Callais, Peter Calcagno, and Gary A. Wagner creates a local and state-level index of net productive entrepreneurship, building on Baumol's hypothesis and earlier work by Sobel. Download the full report: https://lnkd.in/gzVVBuXJ Some of the key findings include: ▪️ Net productive entrepreneurship scores can change drastically for an individual MSA over time. ▪️ There is substantial within-state variation across different MSAs. For example, the MSA with the highest net productive score (San Jose) is in the same state as the two MSAs with some of the lowest scores (Los Angeles and Sacramento). ▪️ The index strongly correlates with income per capita, employment rates, and (lower) income inequality. ▪️ Consistent with trends of declining business dynamism, net productive entrepreneurship is falling over time; however, this is driven primarily by the most populated MSAs. #Economics #WorkingPaper #Econ #Entrepreneurship #Index #NetProductiveEntrepreneurship #EntrepreneurialEcosystem #Baumol #Sobel
